Duke Surgery Research Training Fellowship David Harpole, M.D. Professor of Surgery Associate Professor of Pathology Director of the Surgery Research Training Fellowship Department of Surgery Duke University Medical Center

Background An integrated 2-year research training fellowship was established by Dr. Sabiston in 1964 Historically included a Basic / Translational science experience with an established investigator – mentor More recent inclusions of diversity of research Health Outcomes (MPH or MHS) Research on Education Clinical Trials (MHS) Health Disparities, Health Economics, Global Health Others

Research Fellowship Usually 24 months: R3 and R4 years Exceptions for some MD / PhDs (shorter or longer) Fully funded salary for interval Foundation / Society grant application recommended At least 1 NRSA application Mandatory Expectation of: National presentations high impact meetings (1 or more per year) All projects should have publications at least in preparation prior to leaving lab Expectation of more presentation during SAR years

Logistics and Timeline Schedule Organized by Annual Residency Class R1 July (intern) year – Orientation R1 August – September – Define area of interest R1 October-November – Interview labs / mentors R1 December – Selection of potential project R1 January – Early grant application structured Presentation to Dr. Kirk of early research plan Identification of appropriate Foundation / Society grant R1 March-April – Submission of small grants
