John 19:28-42: The Death of Jesus

Today: Provisions of the gospel in this final week at the cross Perspective: 2 statements at the cross Power: 2 flows from the cross Passion: 2 visitors after the cross

I Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.

No Wonder They Call Him Savior, Max Lucado “There it is. Almost too simple. Jesus was killed, buried, and resurrected. Surprised? The part that matters is the cross. No more and no less. The cross. It rests on the timeline of history like a compelling diamond. Its tragedy summons all sufferers. Its absurdity attracts all cynics. Its hope lures all searchers. And according to Paul, the cross is what counts. My, what a piece of wood! History has idolized it and despised it,

No Wonder They Call Him Savior, Max Lucado gold-plated it and burned it, worn and trashed it. History has done everything to it but ignore it. That’s the one option that the cross does not offer. No one can ignore it! You can’t ignore a piece of lumber that suspends the greatest claim in history. A crucified carpenter claiming that he is God on earth? Divine? Eternal? The death-slayer? No wonder Paul called it “the core of the gospel.”

No Wonder They Call Him Savior, Max Lucado …Its bottom line is sobering: if the account is true, it is history’s hinge. Period. If not, it is history’s hoax. That’s why the cross is what matters.”

John 19:28-30 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture)“I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Psalm 69:21“They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst Think about this: Jesus didn’t use any resources that are not available to us. “Tetelestai” – Carries the idea: of a complete end – to make happen – a debt that is paid in full.

I Peter 3:18 says, “For Christ died for sins I Peter 3:18 says, “For Christ died for sins ... the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.” “All I could see was the fog.…I think if I could have seen the shore, I would have made it.” ~Florence Chadwick If you have received Christ there's nothing more you can do to make yourself more loved or more accepted by God.

John 19:31-37 31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him.

John 19:31-37 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—

John 19:31-37 that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

John 19:31-37 The Point: His death means life for you. Revelation 5:9-10 “..for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.” If you have received Christ you have been given all and are competent in Christ for His work

Self Loather – You are more loved than you have ever dared believe. Self Prover – You are more evil than you have ever dared believe. “A holy despair in ourselves is the ground of true hope.” ~Richard Sibbes, Puritan “But the gospel is you’re more loved than you ever dared believe, and…. you’re more sinful than you ever dared believe. At the same time.” ~ Tim Keller, Pastor NYC

John 19:38-42 38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night,

John 19:38-42 came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one

John 19:38-42 had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

From the Scriptures Joseph was a member of the Sanhedrin was rich was looking for the kingdom of God had a friend with him referred to as a secret disciple …but something is changing

With fresh perspective (of the gospel), assured power (in the gospel), and focused passion (from the gospel) ….what do you need to do?
