Course Overview Steve Chodash and Wood Badge Staff

Let’s Play A Word Association Game Wood Badge = Leadership Let’s play a word association game. I’ll say something and you respond with the first thing that comes to mind. Ready? WOOD BADGE Good answers. If we play this game at the end of the course, when I say WOOD BADGE, I’m sure your first response is going to be leadership. The quality of the Scouting experience for all divisions, depends on the quality of those leading the units and working in the districts and councils throughout the nation. The Boy Scouts of America offer leaders a progression of training to give you the skills you need to provide leadership for Scouting and leadership for America. Here’s how it works….

Boy Scouts of America Training Continuum Youth Protection (Renew Every Two Years) Fast Start Training This Is Scouting Leader-Specific Training Appropriate Outdoor Skills Training Wood Badge Philmont Leadership Challenge Lifelong Learning Orientation and Fast Start – Accompanied by a video, these provide a non-structured introduction to specific scout programs. This is Scouting – This is a 90 minute overview of the mission, vision and values of the BSA and an introduction to each of the Scouting programs. This can be done in a group setting or online. Leader-Specific Training – This training is the nuts and bolts for specific positions in Scouting. Adult leaders can learn how best to fulfill their particular leadership roles in a unit or as district or council Scouters involved with multiple Scouting program areas. Appropriate Outdoor Skills Training – Training opportunities are targeted to enhance the outdoor skills needed by leaders in Scouting’s various programs. Wood Badge – The BSA’s ultimate leadership training for adults, Wood Badge offers a six-day immersion into the theory, practice and experience of appropriate skills for leading others within Scouting and in many environments beyond the BSA. Philmont Leadership Challenge – is the natural follow-up to Wood Badge training. It is the adult course that parallels NAYLE (Nail), National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience. For information, please check the Philmont or national BSA Web sites for dates and details. Lifelong Learning – In addition to its progression of structured training, the BSA encourages leaders to take advantage of opportunities for continuous learning and supplemental training within the Scouting organization – roundtables, pow wows, COPE courses, Scouting’s publications, special courses tailored to specific program areas of emphasis, etc and the great variety of possibilities beyond the BSA to increase skills, Lifelong learning is further enhanced when adults accept the challenge of teaching skills to others. The front end of this, the progression of BSA training, is skills-oriented. In the middle, the emphasis is on leadership. After that, the focus is on advanced skills that require leadership.

What can you expect from Wood Badge? A global view of Scouting Contemporary leadership concepts Team development experience Leadership practice Fun and fellowship A renewed commitment. What Can You Expect From a Wood Badge Course? As a result of attending Wood Badge, you will: Acquire a global view of Scouting as a family of interrelated, values-based programs providing age-appropriate activities for youth. Become familiar with contemporary team leadership concepts Experience the stages of team development and practice leadership approaches appropriate for those stages. Have a great deal of fun in the company of interesting, like minded individuals. Develop a renewed commitment to provide Scouting with the best possible leadership.

Wood Badge Central Themes Living the Values Bringing the Vision to Life Models for Success Tools of the Trade Leading to Make a Difference Wood Badge accomplishes these goals by building all building all the pieces of the course around a foundation of themes. The five central themes of WOOD BADGE Living the Values…Values, Mission and Vision Bringing the Vision to Life-Listening to Learn, Communication, Valuing people and leveraging diversity, Coaching and Mentoring. Models for Success- High performance Teams, Team development Model, and Team Leadership Model. Tools of the Trade-Project Planning, Leading Change, Decision Making and Problem Solving, Managing Conflict and Self Assessment. Leading to Make a Difference-Leaving a Legacy Notice the new Wood Badge logo. It’s in the shape of a pentagon. Each side represents on of the 5 central themes of Wood Badge. Likewise, each of these themes are represented by one of the 5 colors of the MacLaren tartan. The themes are the threads of the course, which when woven together, form the pattern of the tartan and the full measure of WOOD BADGE.

Servant Leadership Leaving a legacy 5. Leading to Make a Difference The fifth of the central themes of Wood Badge is “Leading to make a difference.” Right now, it’s a blank slate. It’s the future. It’s what you do with all you’ve learned from the other four themes of the course. What’s the key take-home message of “Leading to make a difference”? That’s for you to determine in your own life. It is for you to make the most of the opportunities and challenges you find along the way. You will write your own legacy. What are the key take-home messages for “Leading to make a difference”? Let me suggest three. Key Take-Home Messages Values, mission, and vision can change the world. The choice of how you will lead to make a difference in Scouting is up to you. Ask yourself, "What will my legacy be?” Then act to make it real. 12

Why a Troop Setting? Framework to practice leadership Translates to any Scouting program Days 1-2-3 = 3 weeks of troop meetings Days 4-5-6 = Outdoor experience You began this course as Cub Scouts. Several days from now your troop guides will be inducted into the Venturing Program. For most of the course though, you and the staff will be considered members of Gilwell Troop 1. A troop setting provides a good framework to practice the leadership skills introduced during the course. Be assured that the course content and leadership principles will be applicable to all Scouter working in the movement, and will provide a common foundation of leadership skills to be used in all program areas. There will be 3 troop meetings this week end, one you participated in this morning. These represent three weeks in the life of a Scouting unit. The final portion of the course--the outdoor experience, parallels the sort of activity a Pack, Troop, Team or crew would build toward for the final week of a month long program.

The Gilwell Gazette Provides access to information. Tells what’s going on. Is distributed each day. The Gilwell Gazette is the newspaper of the Wood Badge course..it is distributed daily with the intent of letting you all know as much as possible about the inner workings of the course. You will find events for the day, stories about people, and articles submitted by your Patrol Scribes…..Beware though, the Gilwell Gazette will not be able to replace the information that you Patrol Leaders will gather at the Patrol Leader Council Meetings.

Patrol Project Each patrol plans and produces Covers a universal aspect of Scouting Presentation involves all members Is presented on Day Five Earlier today everyone saw the exhibit that your Troop Guides developed. At the Patrol Leaders Council today, each patrol will be challenged to produce a project of its own. The project must illustrate some universal aspect of Scouting that is clearly associated with Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. It must consist of a self-explanatory display and an oral presentation and all patrol members must participate. Patrols will present their exhibits on the fifth day of the course.

Wood Badge Ticket A Wood Badge tradition Action plan for your goals A plan to take home One of the great traditions, and common fears of Wood Badge is the ticket. In Baden-Powells day, those in the military were expected to pay their own way back to England at the end of their service. To be “thrifty” soldiers nearing completion of their duties would seek assignments at posts increasingly closer to their home…A process known as working your ticket. During this course each of you will be asked to develop a ticket, a list of goals that will allow you to use your new leadership skills in ways that will strengthen your units back home. Details of the ticket will be discussed at the Patrol Leader Council and during the presentation on Living the Values this afternoon.
