Spring 2017 Renan Gongora Week One

Orientation: Outline Take pre course assessment Pass out Syllabus Learning Objectives Course Structure Website What you must do to prepare for the course Equation Builder SDBS (learn how to operate) Exercise Search all the products that will be made in the course of this lab Scifinder Create a login Take a student and do it for them (instructions are found on my website)

Course Learning Objectives for Students How to record data carefully How to record relevant observations How to manage lab time effectively How to assess the efficiency of experimental methods given How to plan for the isolation and purification of the substance you prepare How to work safely How to solve problems and think like a chemist Approximate: Learn Organic Techniques (70%) of course Applied to Organic I and II Lectures (30%) of course

What’s New? (It is a lot!) NOT KLUGER’S section... follow procedures from the lab manual and my powerpoints. Labs are divided into technique and preparative experimental labs All quizzes are taken and graded online through webcourses TAs don’t create or grade any of these Students write less lab reports and NONE are dropped!! All have to be written and all are graded (no “completion labs”) All lab reports are submitted to turnitin.com and (you will be graded on turnitin.com and comments appear there) Online website Spectral database (SDBS) will be used to compare all products IR spectroscopy for EVERY experiment (exception: t-pentyl chloride) No excuses!! NMR spectroscopy!! Students do not handle this. GTA will be NMR trained. Students will just prepare the NMR tube (this is for the last three lab experiments)

Preparative Experiments Course Structure: Technique and Preparative Experiments Technique based experiments Preparative Experiments Background Theory You will have to use this for your lab reports for the preparative experiments You will also need it for the quizzes You will also need to refer to this prior to reading the preparative experiments Procedures Motivation/Importance Broader impact in the real world (either technique or final product) Background Theory Technique How it applies to this lab Experiment in General Procedures

Preparative Experiments Course Structure: Technique and Preparative Experiments Technique based experiments Preparative Experiments Covers lower level thinking (only) This is useful to understand higher level concepts later on Covers higher level thinking Lower

Preparative Experiments Course Structure: Technique and Preparative Experiments Technique based experiments Preparative Experiments Extraction Solubility Crystallization IR Spectroscopy (BP, MP) Heating Methods NMR Spectroscopy t-pentyl chloride aspirin 4-methyl cyclohexene isopentyl acetate benzoin benzil Unknown lab

Website: http://www.chm2211L.wordpress.com

Website: http://www.chm2211L.wordpress.com Website had over 20,000 views last semester and over 2,500 unique visitors Syllabus (general copy) Quiz Info (what to study) Notebook (what to include, format) New Updates and Changes Lets you know changes to the website or course, quick communication from the instructor to students without the use of emails Frequently Asked Questions ( I update these as I get them)

Website: http://www.chm2211L.wordpress.com Supplementary Information/videos Watch them, I hand picked them and quiz questions can be based off of this material Student power points (don’t ask TA to email them, YOU can download them on my website) Lab Report Contents Specific key information that must be included in the lab Grading Rubric GTAs will be using this (in conjunction with the syllabus) to assign points to your lab reports

Website: http://www.chm2211L.wordpress.com In summary, it has pretty much has everything you need

What do you need to do before the semester starts? Brush up on Gen Chem (limiting reactants, percent yield, sig figs, etc.) How to use Equation builder in Word (found on the website) search it there Search all chemicals to be prepared in the labs (i.e., t-pentyl chloride, 4- methyl cyclohexene,… etc.) on SDBS so you can answer simple questions for students on how to operate Write down the login for turnitin.com Login: you create Pw: you create You may have created this already for a different class Write down course number (obtained under the personnel section) The password for the course is the first name of the GTA (first letter capitalized) Visit and familiarize yourself with http://www.chm2211l.wordpress.com
