CIM Modeling for E&U - (Short Version) IBM at Distributech 2012 Grid Operations CIM Modeling for E&U - (Short Version)

Industry Issues/Concerns – CIM Modeling for E&U Integration of new functional capabilities across the grid is complex & difficult – Need for a common information model to lower risk in providing brittle integration architectures Overall IT Architecture, Security, & Data Management Uncertainty – Need to allow for flexible architectures that can adapt, supporting standardized models, to avoid vendor or technology specific “lock-in” Lack of unified tools for model development and maintenance – This carries significant additional cost, so need to ensure for tools that address entire model lifecycle Lack in ability to communicate information about the architecture across many different stakeholders – Need for tools that allow for the sharing and traceability of model artifacts with many different sets of important decision makers

CIM Message Assembly CIM v13 models as released by the IEC Based on source (Mainframe billing system) and target (Portal) data entities. Maps the attributes to technology-specific executables. Represents selected CIM entities and attributes New RSA Transform Modified Manual process of comparing existing data entities to select CIM entities WSDLs and XSDs to be deployed on WESB/WPS or other middleware Data Model Abstractions Rational Software Architect (RSA) allows for the import of CIM models, and provides a language for defining transforms and code generation scripts to automate model-driven application integration using the IEC CIM 3

IBM requirements management tooling help trace requirements to models Tracing Requirements into CIM Models In this case, IEC CIM classes from the LoadModel package can be traced to the Information Entity – Load Schedule – identified in the Demand Response normalized use case. We can also see which CIM classes are traced into the Load Schedule requirement Item from the Demand Response use case. IBM requirements management tooling help trace requirements to models 4

Management of CIM Model Across Teams Architect Engineer Manager Developer Team Concert provides versioning, change control and project-level risk management 5

Benefits – CIM Modeling for E&U Summary Visualization, enrichment, transformation of IEC CIM models in single tool Traceability between Smart Grid use cases and IEC CIM models Manage versions and changes to models across distributed teams Integrated suite of tools all built on common Eclipse platform

The Solution Architecture for Energy and Utilities (SAFE) Framework delivers smarter solution deployment across energy value chain The framework gives you speed, flexibility, and choice in deploying solutions -- and it reduces cost and risk The SAFE framework provides: An approach to align technology with utility business needs Utility industry best practices and solution accelerators to speed deployment Re-usable implementation patterns to lower risk Support for adoption of open and industry-wide standards A choice of business applications from IBM business partners IBM’s overall solution strategy links business and IT objectives to give you the capabilities you need to be successful. IBM and business partners provide industry solutions to help meet specific strategic objectives. And these solution offerings leverage IBM industry assets and best practices and business applications. IBM industry frameworks support solution deployment and integration. Frameworks deliver IBM market-leading software, along with pre-built solution accelerators, in an industry context to speed deployment of solutions. Accelerators include: Industry data models, best practices and scenarios, process flows, product extensions The IBM Solution Architecture for Energy and Utilities (SAFE) framework gives you flexibility to deploy multiple solutions at the pace the makes sense for your business and allows you to reuse what you already have in your IT portfolio. This makes implementation faster and lower risk than alternative approaches. Many utilities are approaching transformation progressively, implementing solutions one project at a time that stand on their own – yet can leverage the value created in the one previously completed. But how do you do this and ensure that your solutions “fit” together? The IBM answer is an industry-oriented framework. The framework delivers business value Simplify your infrastructure, reduce costs, and enable growth through innovation Enable integration of information and processes across the utility business domains Build an efficient technology roadmap that you can adjust over time based on business needs Implement framework projects to address business problems across the enterprise Drive a greater return on project investment through asset re-use Speed deployment of solutions The Solution Architecture for Energy and Utilities Framework (SAFE) is an innovative, powerful software platform, uniquely positioned to provide network visibility and control, process automation and business collaboration for solutions across the energy and utility value chain. SAFE is a platform to integrate, manage and optimize utility systems, inclusive of assets, devices, networks, servers, applications and data, driving business agility and intelligent network transformation.

IBM SAFE capabilities are leveraged by the line-of-business to solve their unique business problems at the business domain level CIM Model-Driven Application Integration for E&U Risk & Compliance Management Suggestion: You can add a callout to this slide that indicates which DOMAIN and which CAPABILITY are relevant to the content of the deck you are adding to…. Asset, Device and Service Monitoring Visualize infrastructure availability and performance through device, event and usage data, providing real-time control and analysis to speed time to resolution. Asset Lifecycle Management Track, document and make decisions about the procurement, deployment, operation, maintenance, and disposal of generation plant, transmission or distribution field assets. Business Process Automation Model, manage, and optimize business processes resulting in faster time to market, increased customer satisfaction, and higher productivity. Intelligent Utility Transformation Management Articulate vision and strategy and successfully plan, execute and manage the delivery of complex transformation initiatives Informed Decision Making Use data and information aggregated from business and operation systems to analyze events, develop insights, correlate reactions to change, to improve business flexibility and performance. Improved Customer Experience Deliver convenient, personalized customer experience, by enabling interactive communication and providing consumers more control of their of their energy sources and usage. Regulatory, Risk & Compliance Management Manage large quantities of utility documents and processes to comply with government mandated regulations Security Solutions Comprehensively manage and prevent security risk across all business domains CIM Model-Drive Application Integration for E&U is a Business Process Automation enabled project for IT Enterprise Services
