What is social media and networking? Ben Jonson Primary School What is social media and networking? Social networking is a way of using your computer and other digital devices e.g. smartphone and tablets, to talk to other people, exchange pictures and share videos. Social media are the apps which allow you to do so such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram etc. Ben Jonson Primary School

Social Media at Ben Jonson Ben Jonson Primary School Social Media at Ben Jonson Ben Jonson doesn’t endorse nor allow social media as the age limit for most social networking sites is 13. We only use WordPress and Twitter by staff for posting updates on our website. Only Year 6 children have a limited and secure experience of sharing comments online. Ben Jonson Primary School

Ben Jonson Primary School Why this workshop? Social networking sites are a huge favourite with children, allowing them to stay in touch with friends over chat, meet new people with similar interests, and share photos and videos. Used appropriately, social networks are a great place for young people to demonstrate their creativity. As a parent, there’s plenty you can do to ensure your children’s experience is both safe and fun. Ben Jonson Primary School

Parental control settings Ben Jonson Primary School Parental control settings Children are gaining access to and owning their own devices from a ever younger age. Most devices have parental control settings to help with filtering online content and can even set timed access and duration times. Ben Jonson Primary School

Ben Jonson Primary School Staying safe online Children are quite often ahead of you and sometimes manage to find ways to bypass parental control settings. Talking to your child, openly, and regularly, is the best way to help keep them safe online Ben Jonson Primary School

Explore sites and apps together Ben Jonson Primary School Explore sites and apps together Ask your child what sites or apps they like and talk about what might be OK for children of different ages.  Ask them about how they stay safe online. What is OK and not OK to share? They'll feel involved in the decision-making and learn to understand how to use social sites safely and why not to use some e.g. chatrooms and dating services. Ben Jonson Primary School

Ben Jonson Primary School Family agreement A family agreement is a great way to start a conversation with your whole family about how you all use the internet and discuss together how to behave in a positive way when online at home, at school or at a friends house. Family-agreement Ben Jonson Primary School

Ben Jonson Primary School Ask about things they might see online which make them feel uncomfortable Talk about things they, or their friends, have seen that made them feel uncomfortable Reassure your child that they can always talk to you or their teacher. Show them how to report or block on the sites and apps they use. Ben Jonson Primary School

Talk about how they can stay safe on social networks Ben Jonson Primary School Talk about how they can stay safe on social networks At Ben Jonson we promote the SMART rules: SAFE: Keep information safe MEET: Never meet online strangers. ACCEPTING: Only open messages from people you trust. RELIABLE: Always check information. TELL when someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable. Ben Jonson Primary School
