WHAT IS WORK?. Work when you exert a force on an object that causes the object to move some distance Work is done when the object moves in the same direction.
Work  When a force causes an object to MOVE in the DIRECTION of the force.  Calculated using the equation:  Force x Distance  F x d  Units  Newton.

7.7A contrast situations where work is done with different amounts of force to situations where no work is done such as moving a box with a ramp and without a ramp, or standing still Verb: Contrast Rigor: Analysis

So what does this mean? Contrast vs. Situations of work with different amounts of force (i.e. moving a box with a ramp or with no ramp) vs. Situations where no work is done (i.e. standing still)

TABLE TALK What is work? How do we calculate work? Refer back to your cards. In how many pictures is work being done? Explain. Place post it on the wall.

MAKE SOME OBSERVATIONS

Investigating Work Using two meter sticks set up a ramp ~ 25 cm high. Place the meter sticks ~ 3 cm apart. Using a spring scale measure the amount of force needed to lift the book to top of the book stack. Record the amount of force and distance lifted. Using a spring scale pull the book up the ramp. Record the amount of force and distance pulled. Carry the book a distance of 1 meter. Record the distance and force used to carry the book.

Investigating Work Task Force (N) Distance (m) Work (J) Lifting the book to the top of the stack of books Pulling the book up the ramp. Walking with the book 1 meter. TASK 1 TASK 2 TASK 3

SCENARIO 1: Joey is pushing a box up a ramp a distance of 5 meters with a force of 34 Newtons. Calculate the amount of work done. SCENARIO 2: John is pulling a box across the floor a distance of 5 meters with a force of 52 Newtons. Calculate the amount of work done.

SCENARIO 1: Robert is pushing a box 3 meters down the hall with a force of 200 Newtons. SCENARIO 2: Sam has to move a box to the second floor. He decides to use a pulley to help him lift the box 3 meters up. He uses a force of 100 Newtons to lift the box.

SCENARIO 1: Brandy uses a force of 2 Newtons to lift a pen a distance of .25 meters. SCENARIO 2: Ted pushes against the wall with all his might. He pushes so hard he begins to sweat. Ted pushed against the wall for 30 seconds with a force of 30 Newtons.

SCENARIO 1: A father raised his child 0.25 meters off the ground with a force of 6 Newtons. SCENARIO 2: The librarian carries a heavy stack of catalogued books 15 meters across the library. Today, she completes this task in a record time of 120 seconds.

SCENARIO 1: A student is going to lift a box. He kneels down to place his hands around the box. SCENARIO 2: The student lifts the box 0.5 meters off the ground with a force of 8 Newtons. SCENARIO 3: The student stands with the box while adjusting his weight. He is getting ready to walk while carrying the box.

SCENARIO 1: Joey is pushing a box up a ramp a distance of 10 meters with a force of 26 Newtons. Calculate the amount of work done. SCENARIO 2: John is pulling a box across the floor a distance of 5 meters with a force of 52 Newtons. Calculate the amount of work done. Compare and contrast scenario 1 and scenario 2 in terms of work. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A student slides her notebook 5 meters across the table A student slides her notebook 5 meters across the table. She uses a force of 2 Newtons when she moves the notebook. How much work did she do? Calculate work. Some students are helping their parents load a moving truck. They are trying to move a washer machine. They push on the washing machine with all of their strength, but it doesn't move at all. If the washing machine has a weight force of 1500 N. How much work did they do?
