Communication/Observation

Introduction – Communication The field umpire is required to be able to communicate clearly, utilising voice, whistle and signals during general play. They must also use observation to maintain effective control and presence when required.

Q&A – Comms & Observation Question How can umpires communicate to players during a match? Answer Verbal including voice and whistle. Non-verbal including signals and body language. Question What should the controlling umpire be observing when the ball is out of bounds? Answer Players in the immediate vicinity of the pending ruck contest

What are the attributes of an effective umpiring communicator? Clear Speaker Good Listener Positive body language Demonstrates courtesy and respect for others

How to display Effective Communication Voice – Strong, Clear and firm (avoid screaming) Courteous – Please come back 2 metres number 7. Thank you. Approachable – Be prepared to answer players’ queries. Body Language – Stand with confidence and look people in the eyes when speaking or listening

Observation The umpires need to maintain awareness throughout the entire match. This includes staying focussed on players when the ball goes out of bounds and after a goal or behind. Non–controlling umpires should maintain a presence and be aware of the remainder of the ground including behind them and off the ball.

Observation – Differences between umpires What are the differences in observation requirements for controlling and non-controlling umpires? Controlling Umpire? The umpire should be focussing their awareness on players and officials around the direct contest Non-controlling Umpire The umpire shall demonstrate awareness by scanning the whole ground, communicating and showing presence when required

Summary – Communication and Observation Umpires need to communicate clearly with confidence, and use a strong whistle and signals. Umpires should be approachable and display listening skills with players, officials and other umpires. Umpires must maintain the appropriate distance from play to see the whole contest, maintaining awareness of players around the contest for the ball. Umpires need to work as a team in managing players and officials to effectively control a match.
