Jesus, the Master of our Service John 21:1-14 John 21:1-14 Objective: It is my objective to show how Jesus is the center of our ministry and if He is not, we must come back to Him. We see the disciples fishing and then Jesus restoring them

A Night of Defeat (21:1–3) Peter without orders returned to fishing He had forsaken all to follow Jesus He was now returning to his old life Everything speaks of defeat It is dark—Not walking in the light Their efforts met failure They did not recognize Christ when He appeared John 21:1–3 (ESV) — 1 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.   A. Peter without orders returned to fishing   1. He had forsaken all to follow Jesus Luke 5:1-11 2. He was now returning to his old life   B. Everything speaks of defeat   1. It is dark—Not walking in the light 2. They had no direct word from the Lord 3. Their efforts met failure 4. They did not recognize Christ when He appeared-Showing spiritual dimness

A Morning of Restoration (21:4–14) When Christ appears Light begins to shine Fish are caught-Right side A few minutes’ labor with Christ in control will accomplish more than a whole night of human efforts! John 21:4–14 (ESV) — 4 Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” 6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. 7 That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off. 9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. A. When Christ appears 1. Light begins to shine 2. Fish are caught-Right side A few minutes’ labor with Christ in control will accomplish more than a whole night of carnal efforts!

First story—Luke 5:1-11 …5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink Luke 5:1–11 (ESV) — 1 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

It is interesting to compare this miracle with the one at the beginning of Peter’s career in Luke 5: Luke 5 1. Followed a night of failure 2. No exact number of fish given 3. The nets began to break 4. Christ instructed from the boat John 21 1. Followed a night of failure 2. 153 fish 3. The net did not break 4. Christ instructed from the shore Luke 5 John 21 1. Followed a night of failure 1. Followed a night of failure 2. No exact number of fish given 2. 153 fish (v. 11) 3. The nets began to break 3. The net did not break 4. Christ instructed from the boat 4. Christ instructed from the shore

Characteristics of the Mature Church Faith—Belief that always results in doing what you say you believe Hebrews 11:1 (NLT) Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. Hebrews 11:6 (NLT) And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him. 1.
