And the “Great Dissapointment” Millerism And the “Great Dissapointment” Joshua Eagle

Table Of Contents William Miller Early Millerism The great disappointment Joshua Himes and the Albany conference Joseph Turner and the shut door group Hiram Edson and the seventh day adventist church Effects on the american people

William Miller February 15th, 1782 - December 20th, 1849 Originally a farmer in New York state before becoming a preacher of early Adventism “Millerism” Began preaching of the return of jesus, and its date of october 22nd, 1843 His prediction was based off of Daniel 8:14, the 2300 day prophecy, starting from 457 B.C. A

Early Millerism Through publication and sermons, Millerism became a popular belief in the early 1840’s Pastor Joshua Himes published Signs of the Times, continuing the spread of Millerism The Advent Message To The Daughters Of Zion and The Advent Shield were two published papers that targeted key audiences. Through the fast spread of publications and papers, Millerism became a well-known belief

The great disappointment Come October 22nd, nothing happened Although the day of reckoning was false, many still believed in their faith Three new Millerite sects formed B

Joshua Himes and the Albany conference Himes called for a conference, "to unite our efforts, for the conversion and salvation of sinners."(Himes, 96) Began April 29th, 1845 Miller himself was swayed to join in The conference further defined the adventist belief and created The Advent Christian Church, focusing on open interpretation of the bible and progressive protestant beliefs in how faith should be handled

Joseph Turner and the shut door group These Millerites believed that the “door” to salvation had already closed and that “The wise virgins would be in the kingdom, while the foolish virgins and all others would be on the outside.(Knight 236-237)” Based off the bible passage Matthew 25:1-13 Caused much criticism and segregation in the Post-Disappointment Millerite group

Hiram Edson and the seventh day adventist church Similar to the shut door Millerites, believing that October 22nd was the correct date Edson believed that "the sanctuary to be cleansed in Daniel 8:14 was not the earth or the church, but the sanctuary in heaven.(Knight 305-306) Learned of this truth via a vision he saw in a field Origins of The Seventh Day Adventist Church

Effects on America Via open interpretation of the bible, and later transcendentalist constructs, Millerism proved to be an early catalyst for the second great awakening, and also created religious beliefs still followed to this day.
