Tierra Rica’s Endangered Species

Top Predator The Jaguar: used to be seen regularly in southern Arizona, now rarely. Hunted by ranchers and naturally shy of humans, its dwindling food source has sent it south.

Special Plants An nationally endangered orchid here in the USA found in Tierra Rica forest and meadow areas. Orchids are epiphytes, they grow on other plants.

River Inhabitants The top photo shows the Yaqui topminnow, which is now having to compete with the lower mosquito fish which was introduced as a mosquito aid to the U.S. rivers.

More watery concerns We have several endangered fish. Two more are the Yaqui chub and catfish

Marshy Aviator While some birds are just winter visitors, the beautiful Clapper Rail likes to spend the year here in Tierra Rica too.

Tierra Rica’s Ecosystems River- many fish species, none are endangered Stream- two endangered species (Yaqui Chub and Yaqui Top minnow) Mosquito fish also present Lakes- many water birds especially ducks, has a good population of game fish such as Bass, Bluegill, Crapple and Catfish.

Tierra Rica’s Ecosystems Marsh-many water birds, one endangered species lives year round called the Clapper Rail Forest-many animals, especially Mexican peripheral species of lizards, hawks, songbirds, whitetail deer and other mammals. One endangered, the jaguar. Meadow-An endangered species of orchid only found in the U.S. in this location
