Frequently Asked Questions Accelerated Reader Frequently Asked Questions

What is Accelerated Reader? “Accelerated Reader is designed to be part of a comprehensive reading program. It does not replace basal-reader series or other instructional materials; rather, it supports and enhances them.” (www.renlearn.com)

What is the purpose? Encourages students to practice reading in order to become better readers. Allows teachers to monitor student practice and make adjustments as needed.

How does it work? Students take the STAR test to determine reading level. 7th Graders start with a point goal of 20. Honors students start with 30 points. Then they choose books within the reading range, read them, fill out the reading log, and then take a quiz on the computer. Students read 20 minutes during SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) each day and should read 30 minutes at home each night.

Why do we need it? Some students need the motivation of having a goal to meet to get them to read. Other students might be motivated but struggle with comprehension or finding books that are best suited for them. AR can be an incentive for those who need a little push and the diagnostic tool that helps those who are struggling to get what they need.

Important Test Taking Info A test can be invalidated (erased) if it is determined that the student had an opportunity to cheat. If it is determined that the student(s) created an opportunity to cheat, they will not be allowed to retake the test. How can a test be invalidated? Having the book that you are taking a test on at the test station. This is a close note quiz. The book may not be used. A student is talking to a partner at a test station. This is to protect against sharing answers. A student takes a test for another student. A student uses the protected password to take their own test.

What are the key components? STAR test -students read passages on the computer and select the word that completes the sentences. -used for diagnostic purposes only -helps to determine a starting point for choosing books

Grade Equivalent (GE) -this is the score based solely on the STAR test -not an exact measure of grade level

Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) -the range of book levels students should be selecting -the higher the GE, the wider the range of ZPD -choosing books too low aren’t challenging enough -choosing books too high might be too frustrating

How can parents help? Make sure students are reading every night Help students select appropriate level books Remind students to take quizzes as soon as they finish the book

How to utilize Bogle’s website The library page of the Bogle website has all the information you need about AR. www.arbookfind.com is the website to search to see if there is a quiz available. Access Renaissance Home Connect to check AR information at home and set up email notifications.
