What shaped Gladstone? Your task is to represent the seven different stages of Gladstone’s early career as a bag (as there is a “Gladstone Bag”) and explain under each box why you have represented him in this way. You should think about how Gladstone’s personality could be best shaped - if he is traditional or a reformer; fashionable or practical; Liberal or Conservative. Think about the design and pattern that would be on the bag as well. For example, during his early years in parliament, he was a conservative, so students could decide to utilise a briefcase as this is traditionally a conservative way of carrying items. The Seven Stages are The Young Conservative 1832-1841 Free Trade and Young England: Economic Liberal 1841-1845 The Peelite and Religious Liberal 1843-7 The Humanitarian Liberal 1844-1852 The Free Trade Chancellor 1852-5 and 1859-66 The Uncertain Man 1855-1860 The Political Reformer 1864-8
