Pittsburgh Region Project: The Living Building Proposed Project Overview August 2007

The Living Building This model next generation green building will be the FIRST of its kind in the world. It will… - Demonstrate the newest technology available - Become an opportunity to train the workforce - Serve as a Center of Excellence - Create global awareness of what “green means” - Provide an Opportunity to engage the future workforce in developing a green future

“An Opportunity to Innovate” The Living Building “An Opportunity to Innovate”

The Living Building Next Steps: Next Steps: - Collaboration: (for design, funding, promotion, education, workforce training – improving the technical skills and trades) - Funding: investigation of available sources – “filling the gap”; advocacy for state and federal funding - Market assessment identifying business relationships (ie new venders, suppliers, fabricators) - Corporate engagement with the workforce delivery system - Community engagement: Establishment of an Education Committee that uses the building as a demonstration/showcase (engineering technology, labor, suppliers, government backing/approval); Introduction of “green apprenticeship programs”; training the trainers

The Living Building Key Learning Points It’s all about regionalism – this type of project takes cooperation at all levels; workers from all over; suppliers from all over – it’s a regional supply chain for workers, suppliers, educators, and leadership There are tremendous opportunities to continue to innovate and improve the technologies to make environmentally sustainable buildings. We must continue to make things more sustainable. There are business opportunities in innovation that lead to economic growth and efficiencies This project and our effort tied to it will bring global attention to Pittsburgh.

The Living Building Action Items Secure a foundation grant Present opportunity for ACCE to use the site for a venue for the 2008 Annual Convention (building will be under construction, but hall to host event is available) Secure a foundation grant to help launch education workforce initiatives Launch an awareness initiative where we introduce key regional players to the project. Develop an outreach campaign: create collateral materials, develop a speakers bureau, advertising campaign, talk shows, community speaking engagements
