Mission To investigate learning spaces, both physical and virtual as well as formal and informal

Phase 1 physical learning spaces

OUTCOMES PROCESS Both student and instructor-centered investigation Survey & Focus Groups Guiding principles for physical learning spaces Report: Student/instructor perceptions of Carleton’s classrooms https://carleton.ca/learningspaces/wp-content/uploads/PhysicalSpace-Draft-Report-2016.pdf A new model of Classroom Design Criteria which incorporates the instructor/student perspective from the beginning Learning Spaces website – resources for within/outside Carleton for ongoing research An evaluation of all classrooms from a perspective of supporting flexibility and collaboration. OUTCOMES

Active Learning Classrooms Overview

Phase 2 VirTUAL & DIGITAL learning spaces

@ Carleton

A look at The space… Goals Virtual and digital learning spaces that promote synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities as users interact with virtual space, digital tools, online content, instructors and each other.  To have digital/virtual spaces be recognized as part of a larger pedagogical shift in teaching and learning To set the groundwork to create an institutional digital/virtual strategy Goals

concept map AS SURVEY

Survey instructions Please clearly circle which individual tools you use for learning in the respective virtual learning space category (marked by italics and the shaded boxes). If you use ones not explicitly identified in the map please write them in the relevant empty box. Carleton provided tools are marked in red.

Open-ended questions What is the virtual learning space category you use the most in your learning? Which virtual learning space categories (if any) would you like to see used in your courses? Are there any virtual learning space categories or tools that you would like Carleton to provide easier access to?

to summarize/moving forward… Accomplishments: An improved process and guidelines for classroom design New active learning classrooms at Carleton A new instrument to help guide potential new active learning spaces and configurations Next steps: Assess the impact of active learning classrooms to inform future design @ Carleton Examine the use of virtual/digital spaces in the classroom To guide Carleton’s digital learning strategy and toolbox
