Welcome to Curriculum Night! The mission of West Middle School is to ensure high levels of learning for our school community.

Professional Background Graduated from: University of Missouri Endorsed grades k-8 in Science and Math/Highly qualified Masters Degree from: Oakland University in Reading/Language Arts and Technology

What topics will be taught in 7th grade science Unit 1: Fluid Earth/ Weather and Climate Unit 2: Organization of Living things Unit 3: Energy and Waves Unit 4: Force and Motion/Physics

Interactive Science Notebook (ISN). Composition Notebooks will be used every day for inquiry, lab questions, projects, notes, etc. A table of contents is to be maintained taped on the inside cover. The notebook will be collected and scored sometime during each unit.

Labs and projects: • May be done in groups or individually depending on the assignment. • Will mostly be done in class (some exceptions will apply).

Grades: In this class, we used standards based grading. Grades will be based on the following: •8% labs and in class assignments. •8% District mandated Common Assessment •The remainder will be split evenly between 2-8 standard checkpoints (varies by marking period) Checkpoints are “quizzes” that are graded using a rubric: Checkpoints can be reassessed all marking period long using the procedure on the website. Parents and students should use the MyRCS portal to check grades.

Absences/Assignments: • If students are absent, it is their responsibility to make up the work. • Check the classroom website. Planbook is located there and contains ALL lesson plans with material attached that was given out in class. • Late Assignments per teacher discretion. • Unfinished class assignments/activities will be assigned as homework if possible.

Parent Communication You should have already received a syllabus from your child. Never hesitate to email me with any questions. Check my website for up to date information which includes tests/quizzes and what will be happening for the week. Don’t forget to regularly check myRCS for your child’s progress online. How does the Pre-Algebra classroom run? Students will preview the next days lesson the night before through my moodle site. Students are required to take notes, write down problems that have been done in the video and write down a question for me to answer the next day. The following day consists of a review of the video and to address any questions the students may have. When there are no more questions the students get their practice work that coincides with the video from the night before. This is done so that I am there to help them with their practice. When the students have finished their practice problems, we check them and go over any questions. If time permits, the students get a single quiz question that is taken from their practice work. The student can retake the quiz as many times as needed to master the material until the unit test is given. The quiz retakes are done through my moodle site.

Pre-Algebra Homework Video homework will be given almost every night and is due the next day. Help is available not only from me but from my Moodle site as well. The link can be found by logging onto my school webpage or by following this link: https://moodle.oakland.k12.mi.us/rochester/login/index.php Logging onto Moodle is a good way to look at a lesson ahead of time, or to review a past lesson.. Students can learn at their own pace
