Before you start..... Before you use the app, we highly recommend that you watch the TEC’s guidance video and review the quick reference guides , which can be found here : http://www.tec.govt.nz/aboutus/systems-and-tools/ Select the ‘our information product library’ option to see what is available. Video can be seen on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYBsHec-g3E&feature=youtu.be This is what we’re all about... Preparing young people to compete in the labour market is absolutely crucial, and getting things right will mean: More young people engaged in education, connected to better opportunities (pathways and places), knowing they can move successfully from education to employment – learning to earning More businesses choose to be engaged and connected to education, confident that their skilled workforce needs and requirements are met Our efforts are to: Engage and retain more students in education Lift achievement of NCEA L2, Lift progressions to level 4+, Especially for Priority learners Choice and access to relevant (to them, to their community, to the economy) pathways from school to tertiary study, to employment and training Strongly connect education and employers Ensure a community led approach

Purpose This app focuses on Secondary to Tertiary Transition and allows TEOs and Secondary schools to explore the transition of school leavers into tertiary education. The transition shown is the learners’ first enrolment in qualification-based tertiary education where the enrolment occurs after they leave school.

Examples of what you can discover How many learners are transitioning to tertiary education or not transitioning to tertiary education. Which Tertiary Education Organisation (TEO) school leavers are going to and conversely which schools a TEO draws its learners from. What level of achievement learners left school with, for example NCEA Level 1, 2 or 3 or below Level 1, and what was the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) level of the qualification they first enrolled in at a TEO. Whether transition rates are changing over time. The time delay between learners leaving school and their enrolling in tertiary education and The highest level of qualification learners have completed in tertiary education. What fields of study learners enrolled in based on the New Zealand Standard Classification of Education (NZSCED)

Top Right hand corner of the App Bookmarks Navigate Drop down menu to next or previous sheet (Base sheets) Search function Selections tool The 2nd drop down button gives you information/ tips about how to navigate the app.

Navigating around the sheets In the centre of each of the sheets is all of the school leavers data collated since 2009. Total number of school leavers Number of enrolments Number never entered tertiary

Information you might like to see The Transition by region page provides regional information on learner transitions from secondary school to tertiary study, showing where the learners are coming from and the TEOs they are going to.

Navigating around the sheets In each sheet there are 16 filters available, e.g. To add a selection, to refine your search, simply click on the green button. To close the filter simply click on the red button.

Interactive maps The maps on the app are interactive, this means: 1. You can click on a region to add it to your selection. 2. You can hover over a region to see a total numbers figure. 3. You can use your mouse to zoom in and zoom out of the maps. 4. This icon will reset the zoom.

To remove a selection simply click on the X beside the selection in the tool bar: If you click on the Secondary to Tertiary Transition button (top left hand corner), a window will pop up to confirm when the data was last loaded.

What are the kinds of things this data can give you line of sight on Say I want to know where my kids are going and what they are doing when they have an achievement level of below Level 1 I select my school under the secondary school tab Click on the Secondary School Highest achievement tab and select “ Below level 1 qualification” Across the top I see the information. I had 200 kids leave school with below Level 1 qualifications since 2009. Of those 200, 120 have enrolled in a tertiary education organisation and 75 have not. NB: to protect the privacy of individuals all learner counts have been rounded to the closest 5

Of the 120 who have gone into tertiary education Of the 120 who have gone into tertiary education. I can see on the right hand side which organisations they have gone to. If I go and select the “Transition by NZQF tab “ I can view the number of enrolments by gender and qualification NZQF level and the number of enrolments by qualifications NZSCED area of study....

Some things to consider...... When you look at the programmes schools leavers are going into some times we need reflect back on how we prepared kids for their next step on their journey. Tertiary providers can get a sense of what kids are learning in school and how they can align programmes to best meet the needs of their learners and the needs of employers. There are many conversations that can be initiated off the information in these data sets that supports effective pathway design and programme alignment, particularly as kids transition from school into further education, training, and work.
