The National Association for Gifted Children estimates that there are approximately three million gifted children in the United States, and that these children are members of every race, ethnicity, and socio-economic group.

GATE Identification “LAUSD casts a wide net” Los Angeles Unified School District identifies students in the following 7 categories: Intellectual Ability (I.Q. Assessment – verbal & non-verbal; grades 2nd semester Kindergarten – 12; highly gifted possibility) High Achievement (Two consecutive years in BOTH ELA and Mathematics; weighted in SBAC scores; grades 4-12)(OLSAT-8; grade 2 only) Specific Academic (Two consecutive years in ELA OR Mathematics; weighted in SBAC scores &qualifying report card grades in the oldest year; grades -12) Visual and Performing Arts (Audition or Demonstration; grades 2-12; 3rd Saturday in November & May) Creativity and Leadership (Individual Student Portfolio and Proposal; grades 4-12) CREATIVITY AND LEADERSHIP IS THE MOST DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE BECAUSE IT REQUIRES A PORFOLIO. THIS PERTICULAR IDENTIFICATION IDENTIFIES A CHILD IN THE CATEGORY OF HIGH ACHIEVEMENT BUT IT HAS TO BE A CHILD THAT SELF INITIATES A PHILANTHROPIC PROJECT OR A PROJECT THAT SHOWS INITIATIVE, CREATIVITY AND LEADERSHIP. Leadership would be show by forming a group.

INTELLECTUAL Criteria: (2nd semester kindergarten) Superior cognitive abilities indicated on a standardized administration of an intelligence test given by an LAUSD school psychologist. Referrals can begin the 2nd Semester of kindergarten with significant evidence of the child achieving at least two grade levels above (in ELA and Math). Evidence may include test scores (i.e. curriculum-based assessments) and a K – 2 portfolio. This early identification is reserved for truly exceptional students.

The GATE Screening Committee INTELLECTUAL The GATE Screening Committee (at your school site) At least one member should have an understanding of the candidate’s economic, linguistic, cultural group, and/or abilities. Administrator or Designee GATE Coordinator Classroom Teacher NOTE: Some potentially gifted learners may be able-underachieving and may not meet these criteria. These students should still be considered for referral if they show potential or demonstrate characteristics of gifted learners in other ways.

INTELLECTUAL Score Criteria: District criterion for identification as Gifted is a score of 95 to 99.8 percentile and Highly Gifted is the score of 99.9 percentile on a standardized administration of an intelligence test given by an LAUSD school psychologist. Highly Gifted Applicable is a score between a 99.5 to a 99.8 percentile; students may apply to a highly gifted magnet school program; magnet selection is based upon space availability.

NO PRIVATE PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING! “Test results from private sources may be used to supplement the evaluation, but may not be used instead of test results from public sources. According to County Counsel, selecting students solely on the basis of private test results would constitute denial of equal protection under the law for those who cannot afford or obtain private testing.”

HIGH ACHIEVEMENT Criteria: (5th grade or above) Students who have met the achievement level scale score range for “Standards Exceeded” for two consecutive years of qualifying scores in English-Language Arts and mathematics on standardized tests such as SBAC results.

SPECIFIC ACADEMIC ABILITY Criteria: (5th grade or above) Students who have met the achievement level scale score range for “Standards Exceeded” for two consecutive years of qualifying scores on either English-Language Arts or mathematics on standardized tests such as SBAC results and have the qualifying grades for the oldest year.

VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS Identifying talented students? Look for students who originate, perform, produce, or respond at exceptionally high levels in dance, voice, drama, drawing, and painting. Visual Arts Ability (Gr. 3-12; drawing & painting; requires superior marks at a District-wide Demonstration in the Visual Arts, including the portfolio evaluation) Performing Arts Ability (Gr. 3 -12; dance, drama, or voice; requires superior marks at a District-wide Audition in the Performing Arts in either dance, drama, or voice) (Students identified as talented in the arts receive priority to participate in the Saturday Conservatory of Fine Arts when they apply.)
