What is TransSTEM Academy? TransSTEM is the Transportation and STEM Academy of Cardozo Education Campus. It was established in 1991 and formerly known as TransTech Academy. The Academy combines a high quality education with specialized career pathways, projects, field experiences, mentorships and internships that emphasize S.T.E.M. in the field of transportation. TransSTEM Academy was established in 1991 as the first transportation studies program in the Washington metropolitan area. It was originally known as TransTech. It was re-branded as TransSTEM in 2012 to reflect our strong emphasis on STEM. This year, 2016, we celebrated our 25th Anniversary. TransSTEM features specialized career pathways, mentorships, internships, field experiences and projects that relate to the transportation industry.

Gender We are very proud of our gender numbers which reflect as many female as male students in the Academy.

1 Electro-Mechanical Technology Students learn about electricity, electronics and electro-mechanical technology from industry professionals. Students receive industry certification through the International Society of Certified Electronics Technician (ISCET) in four areas: (1) Direct Current, (2) Alternating Current, (3) Semi Conductors, and (4) Digital Electronics. TransSTEM offers three career pathways. The first is Electro-Mechanical Technology Training (EMTTP). The EMTTP program enables students to demonstrate key competencies in both the electrical/electronic field of study and Career Readiness Practices.

A Transportation and STEM ACADEMY In 2014, the course of study for our EMTTP program was approved by the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET), a first for a high school in the Washington metropolitan area.

A Transportation and STEM ACADEMY Students acquire the necessary skills and knowledge in one or more categories: direct current (DC), alternating current (AC), semiconductors, and digital electronics (DE) in order to gain a post-secondary certification as an Electronics System Associate (Level 1-4) from ISCET.

2 Engineering Students take part in real-world education and hands-on experiences that focus on Science, Engineering, Technology and Math (STEM). Students take several courses in pre-engineering using the nationally renowned Project Lead the Way curriculum, choosing civil engineering and architecture, digital electronics, computer science and software engineering or aerospace engineering as a concentration. Engineering is our most highly enrolled pathway. We are a Project Lead the Way school. Project Lead The Way is the nation's leading provider of STEM programs. It features a world-class curriculum, high-quality teacher professional development, and outstanding partnerships

A Transportation and STEM ACADEMY Since 2006, we have seen a 30% increase in the number of students who go on to major in engineering, computer science and other STEM disciplines.

A Transportation and STEM ACADEMY Students begin with two foundation courses, IED (Introduction to Engineering Design) and POE (Principles of Engineering). Followed by one or more specialization courses in civil engineering and architecture, digital electronics, aerospace engineering or computer science and software engineering.

3 Computer Science Introduces students to the field of computer science through focusing on the conceptual ideas of computing. Students code, build mobile apps, develop games, enter local and national competitions. Won the Verizon App Challenge Best in the State. In this pathway students take Exploring Computer Science, Honors PLTW Computer Science and Software Engineering and AP Computer Science (B). Our most recent career pathway is Computer Science. This pathway consists of three courses: Exploring Computer Science, Honors PLTW Computer Science and Software Engineering and AP Computer Science (B).

FLEX-ACE LAB Students learn the basics of flight and receive hands-on experiences through the use of state of the art computers, flight simulators and a miniature Air Traffic Control tower in a newly installed FLEX-ACE Lab. The FLEX-ACE Lab was established in August 2015 through a partnership with the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. A FLEX-ACE transforms a classroom into an immersive Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) educational environment and allows teachers to instruct through real-world gaming scenarios. TransSTEM students also have an opportunity to engage in flight training in our new FLEX-ACE lab which was established through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense in August 2015. It features flight simulators, and a miniature Air Traffic Control Tower. FLEX-ACE is a pilot effort in the District of Columbia. This pilot is intended to provide a Test and Evaluation based, immersive STEM education environment.

Internships Engage in on the job training in the Electro-Mechanical Technology Training program sponsored by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). Participate in paid and unpaid summer internships and special programs at: Microsoft’s Athletech Duke University Smith University Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Lockheed Martin Northrop Grumman World Bank George Washington University Accenture Experiential Aviation Association, Oshkosh, WI TransSTEM also features a robust Internship program which includes in-house internships for 11th and 12th graders enrolled in our EMTTP career pathway. A summary of our most recent internships and summer opportunities for our students include Microsoft, World Bank, Accenture, and Lockheed Martin. Students have also had summer opportunities at Embry Riddle and the EAA summer aviation camps, and also at Duke, Smith and George Washington Universities.

Mentorships Participate in mentorships and interact with professionals from both the public and private sectors sponsored by the Federally Employed Women (FEW), USDOT. Provide seminars and workshops on personal mission statements, speed mentoring, finance, interviewing strategies and dressing for success. Sponsor field trips to transportation agencies and colleges/universities. We have a mentorship program that is sponsored by the Federally Employed Women of the USDOT.
