Salvation Luke 19.1-10 | October 30, 2016 All Images in this PowerPoint were accessed on 27 October 2016 at www.bing.com

The story of how a short and curious crook got saved… Jesus en route to Jerusalem…passes through in Jericho, v1 Trade route | Lots of opportunity for wealth Zacchaeus introduced, vv2-4 Crooked, curious, short | climbs an ironic tree Jesus invites himself to Zacchaeus’ home, vv5-6 The locals respond (negatively), v7 Zacchaeus reorganizes his financial portfolio, v8 ½ of his wealth immediately to be converted to charity The remaining wealth serves to make restitution for previous acts of extortion and blackmail The declaration of salvation and the restatement of the mission of Jesus, vv9-10

Zacchaeus, The “Lake Wobegon Effect”, and Being the Church “Well, that's the news from Lake Wobegon, where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average.“ -- Garrison Keillor, the sign off from his weekly monologue on “A Prairie Home Companion” (NPR: 1974-2016) Most of us think we are entitled to live in Lake Wobegon, not Jericho…but the reality is we live with injustice all around us…some of it even perpetrated by us Our salvation is wrapped up in the question: “What do we do when Jesus speaks to us?” God’s mission, fulfilled in Jesus, is to seek out the lost…and save them

SERMON | Luke 19,1-10 2016-10-30 For Talking Back… The Orthodox Church considers Zacchaeus an Apostle of the Church…a witness bearer of the good news of Jesus… How curious are we about understanding and following Jesus? What do we do when Jesus invites himself into our lives? How does following Jesus change our perspective and even our economics? How is Jesus mobilizing us to join him in seeking and saving “the lost”? (c) 2016, Jeff Wright

SERMON | Luke 19,1-10 2016-10-30 One More Thing… (c) 2016, Jeff Wright
