Objective: What are the basic components of an atom? Do Now: Watch the video clip, answer the following question- Why do we study chemistry in biology?
WHAT IS CHEMISTRY? The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes.
 Matter is composed of extremely small particles, too small to be seen with a classroom microscope, called atoms.  Atoms: smallest part of an element.

UNIT 1 Matter Day 13 Monday, September 18, 2017 Atoms 8th Grade Science

Unit 1 – Matter- Day 13 Focus: Atoms 9/18/17 Turn in the homework “An Atom Apart” worksheet. Pick up a copy of the 3 sheets on the front of the lab table. (periodic table, notes page, atomic basics) Open your binder to your science starter sheet.

Science Starter Copy: What information do you think you can get about elements reading the periodic table?

Plan for the Day 1. Discuss homework/flash cards 2. E.Q. 3. Lesson on atoms a. Brainpop video b. Notes about elements and atoms c. “Atoms and their parts” reading and practice and “Atomic Structure” 4. Wrap-up

Homework: Complete the “Atomic Basics” worksheet. ***Bring colored pencils to class starting Friday. Complete the “Atomic Basics” worksheet. Make flash cards for 18-21.

Essential Question – Copy on page 13(?) How do the parts of an atom relate to the periodic table of elements?

Let’s watch a Brainpop video about atoms. https://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandchemistry/atoms/

Let’s do the notes about atoms and “Atoms and Their Parts” and “Atomic Structure” worksheet. You will use your copy of the periodic table. Take care of it. Don’t lose it. Don’t write anything on it except your name. ***You will need colored pencils this Friday and every day next week. I do not have a class set of colored pencils.

Let’s go to our vocab. sheets to fill in information about atoms. Atoms and the PT ppt.pptx

19. Elements Def. pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances. 1. Composed of one type of atom 2. There are over 100 known elements; 92 are natural, a few are man-made 3. All of them are listed on the Periodic table. 4. Examples: oxygen, carbon, chlorine, gold, mercury

20. Atom: D-The smallest unit of all matter A.D. every element is made of them A.D. –have three parts (sub-atomic particles) in them (protons, neutrons, and electrons)

21. Nucleus: Def. The center of the atom. A.D.it contains the protons (+) and the neutrons (neutral) A.D.it contains 99% of the mass of the atom.

22. Proton: A positively (+) charged particle in an atom. A.D. located in the nucleus A.D. it has mass A.D. all atoms of the same element have the same number of protons in every atom. Ex. Every atom of Hydrogen has one proton. Every atom of Helium has 2 protons.

23.Neutron: Def.Atomic particle which has a neutral charge (no charge-0). A.D.located in the nucleus A.D.has mass A.D.atoms of the same element MAY have different numbers of neutrons

Protons and neutrons Electrons (NOT in the nucleus)

24.Electrons: Def. Negatively (-) charged particles circling outside the nucleus of the atom. A.D.almost no mass A.D.Circle around the nucleus in orbits, levels, or shells

25. Atomic Number: Def. number of protons in the atom. A. D 25. Atomic Number: Def. number of protons in the atom. A.D. Determines what the element is A.D. Different for every element

26. Atomic Mass: Def. - number of protons and neutrons…protons + neutrons… in an atom’s nucleus. A.D. most of an atom’s mass is in the nucleus

Let’s work with our groups to complete a lab about the charges of atomic particles. STAY ON TASK AND BEHAVE! Read the lab step-by-step and follow directions carefully. Record your observations on back of the warm-up sheet.

Wrap-up: Discuss with your group and answer today’s E.Q.
