THE INFLUENCE OF LIGHT POLLUTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE

WHAT IS LIGHT POLLUTION? (disturbing light) is definied as artifical light produced and wasted by humanity, it disrupts natural level luminosity of night environment.

THE SKY IN DIFFERENT PLACES

VERY DARK SKY THE SKY OVER LEGNICA

The source of light pollution is mainly outdoor illumination and in particular the one which is: badly directed, has improper emission spectrum, lighter than we need, turned on when it isn’t used. Wrong street light (left side) causes wasting of light and brightening the night sky. Good lighting(right side ) allows to effectively use artifical light and keep view of starry night. (© Martin Lewicki)

WAYS OF STREET LIGHTING

OUR TOWN AT NIGHT

THE SOURCES OF LIGHT POLLUTION flickering ads brightly glowing signs of shops illuminated facades of buildings

THE SOURCES OF LIGHT POLLUTION light of shopping malls open to late hours illuminations widespread street lighting

THE INFLUENCE OF LIGHT POLLUTION Outside light which doesn’t light where is needed or light too brightly is a waste of electricity. Producing energy from non- renewable sources has a negative influence on the environment and the climate. The majority of greenhouse gases is produced from coal burning.

RENEWABLE SOURCES (about 12%) THE SOURCES OF ENERGY IN POLAND GAS (about 3,5%) BLACK COAL (about 50%) RENEWABLE SOURCES (about 12%) BROWN COAL about 31%) THE OTHERS ( about 3,5%)

OVERUSE OF ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING CLIMATE CHANGE increased cost of power production increased consumption of coal for energy production CLIMATE CHANGE increased emission of CO2,

THE IMPACT OF THE INCREASED CO2 on GLOBAL WARMING The greenhouse effect Moving of climate zones Devastating hurricanes, floods, cyclones, droughts and fires Animal migration Ocean level rise Melting of glaciers

ATMOSPHERE The sunlight reflected from the earth goes into space The amount of the earth heat radiates into space GREENHOUSE GASES ( mainly CO₂) The majority of the earth heat is stopped by greenhause gases The sunlight comes onto the earth The earth surface warmed by the sun radiates the heat back to the atmosphere THE EARTH

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT LEADS TO GLOBAL WARMING GLOBAL TEMPERATURE The average temperature within one year The average temperature within five years

GLOBAL WARMING EFFECTS HURRICANES OR ORKANS HEAVY RAIN, SNOW FALL, HAIL FLOOD DROUGHT

The renewable sources of energy should be used more often.

sources of Energy in Europe Renewable sources of Energy in Europe POLAND 12 %

Do you know……. that in Poland there are about 3,3 mln street lamps out of which 60% are traditional ones – they use a lot of energy, in the next few years most of Polish municipalities plan to replace traditional lamps with led ones and introduce the intelligent systems of street lamp steerage, this solution will allow to save over 80% of energy.

EXAMPLES OF BAD LIGHT FITTINGS

THE SYSTEM OF INTELLIGENT STREET LIGHTING, SOLAR PANELS AND A WELL- CONSTRUCTED STREET LAMP WITH A LED BULB
