Lesson Cover – pupil instructions You will need to use your iPad. Read through the presentation carefully. Complete and then print the sheet listing ‘everyday acids’ (sheet 4) Read the ‘hyperlinked’ news article about John George Haigh Imagine that you are a news reporter – investigate headlines from the time and then write your own news report (using word or publisher) of the incident - refer to pages 6 and 7 for hints. Note that £4000 in 1944 is the equivalent of about £160000 today If you have time print out and stick the news article into your prep book If you finish find answers to the squares on page 9 – extend the table on page 10 for your answers

Acids at home Acids have a sour taste, like vinegar, which contains ethanoic acid, and lemons, which contain citric acid. These are safe to use in food, but they can still hurt if they get into a cut or into your eyes. Other acids you will find at home are carbonic acid in fizzy drinks, tannic acid in tea and ascorbic acid which is vitamin C, found in fruit and vegetables.

What are acids used for in everyday life?? Everyday acids

Acid bath murderer Read the following article News article How did John George Haigh use acid to try and get away with murder?

Write a headline and brief news report on the John Haigh case You must include You could include A catchy headline Knowledge of acids An image / drawing

Keywords/ facts to include 6 victims several weeks Sulphuric acid Dentures, red plastic handbag and 3 human gallstones remained Corrosive All DNA evidence destroyed Dangerous method of body disposal 27 gallons needed
