Perfect Passive Particples

Latin loves participles…..more than English so you have to learn them!

Perfect Passive participles in English: Translated – “having been _____ed” Or “ ________ed” “having been praised” “Praised”

Participles are adjectives so they describe a noun The student, praised by the teacher, was learning Latin.

The soldier, having been wounded in battle, was carried off the field.

The woman, having been seen in the garden, denied knowing Grumio.

We will share them with the class. On your paper, create your own sentence using a perfect passive participle in ENGLISH We will share them with the class.

honoravi, honoratus (having been honored) In Latin, the perfect passive participle comes from the fourth principle part of the verb. 1 2 Honoro, honorare, 3 4 honoravi, honoratus (having been honored)

Cogidubnus, a Quinto honoratus, laete ridebat. Cogi, having been honored by Quintus, was laughing happily.

Hasta, a milite deiecta, Barbillum vulneravit. The spear, having been thrown down by the soldier, wounded Barbillus.

Aedifico, aedificare, aedificavi, aedificatus Students A--Turn to your partner and tell him/her what the perfect passive participle of this verb is Aedifico, aedificare, aedificavi, aedificatus

Students B– Tell him/her what this ppp means: aedificatus

More about perfect passive participles Just to help you understand.

There are different types of participles– a perfect participle happened and was completed in the past—before the verb.

Faber, ab architecto laudatus, valde laetus erat. The craftsman was praised before he was happy.

A passive participle describes a person who received the action of the verb (not the doer) Faber, ab architecto laudatus, valde laetus erat. Here—the craftsman received the praise—he did not make the praise-- and that’s why it’s passive

Perfect Passive Participles are adjectives so they are declined. Masculine Feminine Laudatus Laudati Laudata Laudatae Laudati Laudatorum Laudatae Laudatarum Laudato Laudatis Laudatae Laudatis Laudatum Laudatos Laudatam Laudatas Laudato Laudatis Laudata Laudatis
