Guerrilla Assessment: Assessment for the Rest of Us Lisa Gayhart, User Experience Librarian Debbie Green, Head, Reference and Research Services, Robarts Library CLAW - October 16, 2015

Driveshare tool identify a need create a prototype test

Takeaways Why early assessment is important Confidence in your assessment ability Some tools and ideas for use Heightened comfort working with users

Planning your assessment Identify the issues Clarify issues, why they are important, why do you care, what would you like to see happen Identify who to involve/who is affected Determine information needs Identify the kind of information that will clarify the situation, is it behavioural information, (what people are doing) or attitudinal (if they are not using, why not) or both Choose tools that suit the need Is there potential for involving users in the outcome, (participatory design) Based on the information you collect, test a new arrangement

Workstation lineups There are lineups on your main floor for workstations. Your staff tell you they see unused workstations on your second floor. You suspect users are having trouble figuring out where there are available workstations in your building and could benefit from some kind of support. You are required to make a budget pitch every December and it’s now the end of October. Use the assessment planning process to identify issues and possible solutions. What methods might you use to find out what is happening? Define measurable goals for the solution you are likely to propose.

Wireframe exercise Use the worksheets provided to plan a quick test of your ideas and assumptions around the task of building a new help section for the library’s website. Think about your task and go out into the “field” to test you’re your wireframe with a small group of students. Come back and plan how to share your results.
