John Bowers Director of Academic Technology You have a brochure in your packet called “WKU Technology for Employees.” We have a matching brochure called “WKU Technology for Students.”

Information Technology Division www.wku.edu/it Find Information Technology under “Quick Links” on the WKU home page. Services for faculty are listed under tab for “Employees.”

IT Helpdesk www.wku.edu/it/helpdesk www.wku.edu/it/chat 270-745-7000 Monday – Friday: 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM Weekends: 11:30 AM – 8:00 PM Single point of entry for all IT-related requests. Call or chat. Submit self-service requests through the Service Catalog. Save 270-745-7000 as the Helpdesk number in your mobile phones now.

IT Service Catalog Find this at the “Submit a Request Online” link from the IT Division home page. Login is required (NetID). Under the “Services” tab, self-service access to Helpdesk requests and tickets. You can submit a new request in the categories listed. You can also review the status of your own open tickets. Under Knowledge Base tab, find articles that provide solutions to frequently asked questions. Articles come from IT staff and are reviewed and updated. Browse the KB categories, or use the “Search” link to find a specific text phrase in all articles.

NetID Accounts www.wku.edu/it/accounts Example NetID: bgr01906 Use NetID to log in to your office computer, WKU email, Blackboard, TopNet Create/Reset My NetID Password Password: 8 characters minimum, alpha and numbers/special characters Universal login for WKU IT systems. All NetIDs are three letters and five numbers. Go to the Accounts page to initially set up your NetID and password. You can generally keep your NetID private – it is not the same as your WKU email address, and nobody other than you needs to use it. Never give out your password. WKU will never ask you to give your password. If you receive an email and it requests you to submit your password, it is a phishing scam. Use www.wku.edu/it/accounts to look up your NetID, set the password, or to change your password any time. At the Info Fair, we’re set up to assist you today with getting your NetID and password set up.

WKU Email & Calendar Faculty: first.last@wku.edu (usually) Students: first.lastxxx@topper.wku.edu Official communications Use email.wku.edu anywhere In your office, use Outlook if you prefer Look up email addresses in the WKU Directory. Individuals who are both an employee and a student will have both a topper address and a wku.edu address. WKU administration and Academic Affairs use WKU email for official communications to faculty. All faculty are automatically added to the WKU “faculty-all” mailing list and you will receive announcements and official communications through this list. You cannot unsubscribe yourself from this list. The list is not to be used for threaded discussions. WKU students understand that they will receive official communications from WKU and from their class instructors in their “topper” accounts. Web interface at email.wku.edu can be used from any Internet-connected computer. Ask at the Info Fair or call the Helpdesk for help setting up a mobile device, forwarding your WKU mail to another account, or using the WKU calendar.

TopNet topnet.wku.edu TopNet provides a secure web front-end to many Banner services. Banner is our WKU enterprise system for student, HR, and finance data. This slide shows the “Faculty Services” tab in TopNet. Some of the most common things faculty will do in TopNet are: Upload syllabi Retrieve class rosters Submit required assessments Submit grades You will receive an official request for assessment in the fifth week of classes. Administrators, including department chairs, have access to Banner and will receive separate training to use it.

WKU File Shares P: is your personal storage, not shared S: is a shared drive (department-wide, university-wide) Access these anywhere: mystuff.wku.edu You are likely to have an office computer with a wired network connection. You will use your NetID credentials to log in to it. You’ll then see the P: drive and the S: drive in your directory windows. Use the mystuff address for access to the same directories from off campus.

Blackboard blackboard.wku.edu Blackboard is WKU’s learning management system. Used for Distance Learning courses. Also used by many faculty in face-to-face classes to offer course materials, class discussions, multimedia files, tests, quizzes, etc. Also available for campus organizations. Our installation of Blackboard is heavily customized to work with Banner and other WKU systems. Training is required for a new instructor – can be completed fully online.

Technology Training Required Blackboard training is available fully online (IT Training tab in Blackboard) Other online training: www.wku.edu/it/videotutorials Calendar for face-to-face training: www.wku.edu/it/training We offer self-service, on-demand training using video tutorials wherever possible. Student Technology Centers www.wku.edu/it/labs Cherry Hall Snell Hall Helm Library Grise Hall Mass Media & Technology Hall South Campus (inset) Almost all WKU students use the Student Technology Centers because free printing is available. Faculty can also use STC lab computers and printers.

WKU Wireless (WiFi) Available in all WKU buildings and many outdoor locations. “WKU-SECURE”: Recommended for most devices. Offers a higher level of security than other WKU wireless networks. “WKU-WIRELESS”: Alternate wireless network for devices that can’t support the higher level of security (always try WKU-SECURE first). “WKU-GUEST”: Recommended for guests of the University. No authentication required, limited speed, restricted network traffic.  WKU employees and students should not use this network. Our campus wifi has multiple networks available to best serve the needs of various client groups.

Software Center www.wku.edu/it/sms Download free software for WKU computers Educational pricing on select software for WKU and personal computers Quotes and purchasing information Free software includes Microsoft Office, SPSS, Mathematica, and ArcGIS. Discount pricing is available for many Adobe and Microsoft products. You can go through the Software Center for paid iPad/tablet apps as well. Symantec Endpoint Protection and Microsoft Office Home Use Program are available for your personally-owned computers, as well as other titles.

Other useful items Microsoft Office iWKU Tegrity Deep Freeze We have a campus-wide license allowing Microsoft Office to be installed on any WKU-owned computer. Students also have free access to Microsoft Office through their Topper accounts. This covers both Windows and Mac computers, as well as iPads. iWKU is our mobile app for iOS and Android. It includes campus maps, directory, and selected TopNet services. There is also a Blackboard mobile app called Blackboard Mobile Learn. Tegrity is our campus standard for recording multimedia files and providing them to students through Blackboard. Tegrity files can be played through most browsers. The IT Division also supports departmental computer labs and technology in classrooms. Lab and classroom computers are locked down and secured using Deep Freeze. The computer will return to its original state with every restart. For that reason, you cannot permanently store files or permanently install software on a classroom instructor computer.

Information Technology Policies www.wku.edu/policies/ All faculty and staff are responsible for understanding and complying with the policies. Of particular importance to faculty: Information Security Policy Information Security Plan, which includes the FERPA guidelines that protect the privacy of student information Privacy of Electronic Information Policy. Also, please review the information at www.wku.edu/it/security. Security of protected information is everybody’s responsibility at WKU and there are many threats and ways that our information security can be compromised.
