Where did our knowledge of basic atomic structure come from? - How did Democritus and Dalton first help us understand the nature of matter?

“Matter is made up of tiny indivisible particles called atomos.” Atoms of different elements differed in size, shape and temperature. Atoms move through empty space. Atoms are solid and indestructible. Size, shape and movement determine properties. None (no experiment)

Dalton’s Postulates Atoms are small and indivisible. (a small, indivisible particle) Revived Democritus’ ideas. Studied many chemical reactions to support his hypotheses. Determined mass ratios of elements involved in reactions. Dalton’s Postulates Atoms are small and indivisible. Atoms of an element have identical properties. Atoms of different elements have different properties. Atoms are not created or destroyed in chemical reactions. Compounds contain a FIXED ratio of different elements. (Law of Definite Proportions)

Where did our knowledge of basic atomic structure come from? - Form groups of four – your “home group”. - Each person is responsible for reading an article about some scientists and their experiments and conclusions relevant to our understanding of atomic structure. - Each person in a group will get different scientist(s): Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr, and Schrodinger/Chadwick.

Once you have your “scientist” assignment, pair up with another student in the class who also has your scientist(s). Work with your partner. On your History of the Atomic Theory handout, describe or draw/label their experiment or thought process, their results, their conclusions, and draw an atomic model that incorporates their conclusions. Once your home group comes back together, teach each other about your scientist(s). Do not let them copy! Explain to them what is most important to know about your scientist.
