How did you do?

Flashcards You will need to know EVERY word from “Know the Lingo.” You will be making flashcards. These are due by FRIDAY for a grade! You can make the flashcards on note cards or Quizlet, but I must see them in your hand on Friday.

“Mother to Son” 1. Find the poem titled, “Mother to Son.” 2. We’ll listen to a recording of this poem first. https://safeshare.tv/submit?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DNX9tHuI7zVo

“Mother to Son” DUE: THURSDAY! 3. On a separate sheet of paper: - Answer the 5 questions underneath the poem. - Complete Option 1, 2, or 3 (remember: 10 lines minimum) DUE: THURSDAY!

Poetry in Songs Compare and Contrast a SONG to a POEM. First, we’ll listen to “A Red, Red Rose.” Then, we’ll listen to “Stereo Hearts.” Be ready to analyze these two pieces for poetry elements, figurative language and meaning.

Rhyme Scheme What is Rhyme Scheme? A regular pattern of rhyming words in a poem How do I find it? Circle/Highlight end words in lines of the poem. Designate “a” as the first sound. Continue with each letter of the alphabet as your reach a new sound. 4. Continue with the WHOLE POEM!

Rhyme Scheme continued We will continue practicing Rhyme Scheme today! Reminder: How do I find it? Circle/Highlight end words in lines of the poem. Designate “a” as the first sound. Continue with each letter of the alphabet as your reach a new sound.

Watch this prezi about Shakespearean Sonnets. Write 3-5 Notes! http://goo.gl/RyTp9D

The Haunted Palace Turn to the poem in your packet titled, “The Haunted Palace.” Highlight the vocabulary provided to you on the back page. In a different color, highlight details that describe the castle/palace. Then, draw the castle as precisely as you can while we listen to a reading.

The Haunted Palace Poetry Terms Practice Label the following: - Enjambment - Consonance AND Assonance - Alliteration - Internal AND External Rhyme Share out with EXAMPLES of each!

The Haunted Palace * Share with your partner: What do you notice about this poem? What seems troubling? What might this reveal about Poe? * Answer the 5 questions directly in the packet. (attach paper if you need to)

Who was Poe? Watch this video about Poe’s life to get a better understanding of where he was coming from. Be ready to share out with a partner about what you learned. http://www.biography.com/people/edgar-allan-poe-9443160

The Raven We’re going to follow this prezi to learn about Poe and one of his most famous poems. Follow along with the prezi in your packet. http://goo.gl/cI9tW0

The Raven Poetry Terms Practice Label the following: - Enjambment - Consonance AND Assonance - Alliteration - Internal AND External Rhyme

What is the pattern?

Time to Write! Option #1: create a raven-style poem on your own topic. Use the one assigned to you for the sonnet, switch topics with someone, or come up with your own. Option #2: mimic the style of “The Raven” and create at least 2 stanzas that could seamlessly fit into Poe’s original poem. BOTH OPTIONS must follow the syllables & rhyme scheme format!

Acrostic Poem Read the paragraph titled, “Going Vertical-The Acrostic Poem.” Highlight the main points. Be ready to share! What is a Basic vs. Advanced Acrostic Poem?

Advanced Acrostic Poem Read the 3 examples. What do you notice about these? Label their Rhyme Schemes. Be ready to share!

Your Turn! If you cannot type it, write it NICELY on printer paper. Find the box to the bottom right titled, “ASSIGNMENT.” Read these directions for how you will create your own Advanced Acrostic Poem. Choose a topic/phrase/name with AT LEAST 14 LETTERS. Turn this in TYPED by Friday-4/7/17. If you cannot type it, write it NICELY on printer paper.

Poem Sampling What is the tone & theme of each? Let’s check out some poems that our Junior Great Book has to offer!  “Harlem” (Page 191) “[n]” (Page 193) What is the tone & theme of each?

Poem Analysis Time First, we’ll listen to the poem. The poem, “Snake,” is on Page 198. Next, we’ll complete a Poetry Analysis Sheet: you will discuss theme, tone, poetic devices, rhyme scheme, summary, and your own perspective.

Poetry Review Take out your flashcards. We will look at a poem and find each poetic device in the writing. (We will do this 2x!) IF they are non-existent, make a LIST somewhere on the page of the poem.

Poetry Packet: Due Monday! Stereo Hearts/Red, Red Rose Activity Sonnet “The Haunted Palace” Annotations “The Haunted Palace” Questions “The Raven” Annotations Your “Raven-like” Poem (on the back) Haikus Poem Annotations (last 2 poems)
