It appears that ADCTrim = 0x5 (default is 0x4) is better suited for most of our DS. → Should we plan to measure Vref Configuration and configure them differently depending on each DS ? question : what is the tolerance of the SAMPA on this ADCtrim tuning ? 18juin2013, 9 papers out, #citations 72 pp 7Tev, 67JpsiPbPb, 32 muon 7TeV, 28 Jpsi pol, 26 jpsi pp 2.76, 24 muons PbPb, 20 Jpsi mult, 11 Jpsi Photo PbPb, 10 low masses Elliptic flow paper (Pb-Pb 2010) The observed similarity at RHIC and the LHC of pt-differential elliptic flow at low pt is consistent with predictions of hydrodynamic models. Dual Sampa Update DS345-1: Sending wrong data (not corresponding to selected channels), format/header wrong. Send data continuously even in triggered mode. Not usable. (→ irradiation) DS345-2 (modified 160-10-40): Configuration/registers ok. A problem with readout. According to BengYun, dataword flow even when stopping readout (trigger mode). Managed to take pedestal data but indeed the chip appears to be stuck in continuous mode after a software reset. Need hardware reset to put it back to triggered mode. Zero-supp + cluster sum readout of 64 channels ok. DS345-3 (modified 160-10-40): Readout works DS345-4: Readout works DS345-5: no data out at all, likely a soldering problem on Sdserial0data. Configurable but not usable. DS345-8 : high current on one of the SAMPA. (→ irradiation) DS345-21: all data (header and payload) out are corrupted. Configurable but not usable DS345-22: Readout works. see google doc page (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13sUeNapmvGChSw- EFuqrmFXQnLThdqxgfxkkOUszq7k/edit?usp=sharing) Readout works means that : FPGA reader for DualSampa code developed in Orsay by BengYun from scratch. Readout in MCH config with 80-10-40 MHz ok . Arild latest code version (rev778) now handles the MCH config (thanks). Readout in MCH config with 80-10-40 MHz ok. → readout in MCH configuration validated on PCCA and DualSampa. For the DualSampa still need a validation with a very large number events. What can explain so many problems in the DS345 ? Some SAMPA BGA were soldered twice, this may not have been made properly. → additional x-Rays test next week 18juin2013, 9 papers out, #citations 72 pp 7Tev, 67JpsiPbPb, 32 muon 7TeV, 28 Jpsi pol, 26 jpsi pp 2.76, 24 muons PbPb, 20 Jpsi mult, 11 Jpsi Photo PbPb, 10 low masses Elliptic flow paper (Pb-Pb 2010) The observed similarity at RHIC and the LHC of pt-differential elliptic flow at low pt is consistent with predictions of hydrodynamic models. Dual Sampa readout [ongoing work] Descending data rates at 80 MHz (10 kHz pulse injected on each channel) triggered mode : 64 channels pedestal ok (50b+1002*10b)*64 = 644480 b → 10070b/channel continuous mode : 1+1 channels pedestal (50b+1002*10b)*2 = 20140 → 10070b/channel. not ok (data truncated) 4+4channels zero-suppressed (~ 10 words/channels) = (50b+10*10b)*8 = 1200b → 150b/channel. ok 16+16 channels zero-suppressed (~ 10 words/channels) = (50b+10*10b)*32 = 4800b → 150b/channel. ok decompression errors when increasing the number of channels 32+32 channels zero-suppressed, cluster sum (50b+4*10b)*64 = 5760 b → 90b/channel. ok but on a small number of events. Investigating data parity errors messages. → verification on the PCCA board with rev778 (all channels, so 32, in cluster sum mode) with the 80 MHz readout : everything's fine for a large very number of events bunch-crossing id in the header of sampa0 and sampa1 may different (few bx, up to 3 seen so far). Seen cases where sending bunchcrossing synch signal does not help. → potential problem... in the experiment we'll have to synchronize 38000 sampa ! 18juin2013, 9 papers out, #citations 72 pp 7Tev, 67JpsiPbPb, 32 muon 7TeV, 28 Jpsi pol, 26 jpsi pp 2.76, 24 muons PbPb, 20 Jpsi mult, 11 Jpsi Photo PbPb, 10 low masses Elliptic flow paper (Pb-Pb 2010) The observed similarity at RHIC and the LHC of pt-differential elliptic flow at low pt is consistent with predictions of hydrodynamic models. Conclusions Readout of DualSampa communication with both SAMPA ok daisy chain works triggered readout allows to collect pedestal on 64 channels continuous readout need to be tested more errors, data flow maximum rate, etc → we are investigating parity errors and bunchcrossing synchronisation problems → may have just found something... SAMPA does not encode properly signal when pulse is in between packets ! software reset seem to change readout mode (triggered → continuous) without modifying bit[0] of VACFG Half of the DS board shows problems : most likely due the BGA re- soldering.

Remarks, requests & code/sampa problems... SAMPA default configuration: when sampa is powered on, the default configuration is 4 e-links and continuous readout mode, without any filter (zero-supp, baseline correction) Dual Sampa is by default in non-working state (with too much data flowing) → software (asynchronous) reset does not always help. And also it will always loose the DS synchronization and chage the readout mode to continuous. → hardware reset. Reset all registers and put back the initial – not appropriate – configuration. we cannot find a repeatable procedure to run pedestal/triggered mode and then to continuous readout, zero-supp+BC, bunch-crossing synchronized. Changing the readout configuration (thresholds or baseline correction) very often leads to meta-stabilities. Our request would... we don't know ! Anything possible that can help to start/stabilize the operating of dualsampa : changing the default configuration implementing a I2C register with a programmable configuration that is not impacted by the reset (hard or soft) – VACFG and SOCFG external configuration (same as clock) how to force the DS bunch-crossing synchronization. understand why the signal “sync bunch crossing “ does not work sending “event trigger” sometimes does not help to synch bx (or need to send a lot of them, >10) signal -hardwired- to switch from continuous/triggered mode ? 18juin2013, 9 papers out, #citations 72 pp 7Tev, 67JpsiPbPb, 32 muon 7TeV, 28 Jpsi pol, 26 jpsi pp 2.76, 24 muons PbPb, 20 Jpsi mult, 11 Jpsi Photo PbPb, 10 low masses Elliptic flow paper (Pb-Pb 2010) The observed similarity at RHIC and the LHC of pt-differential elliptic flow at low pt is consistent with predictions of hydrodynamic models. Remarks, requests & code/sampa problems... SAMPA registers and software reset in triggered mode, after a software reset, data are still send out as in continuous mode (despite the fact that the corresponding bit is set at 0 in the VACFG register). One need to set the bit[0] to 1 again and then back to 0. [seen on PCCA and DS, and with both softwares]. Register do not reflect the real state of the sampa. Misc. reading out DS in continuous, packets from both chip are desynchronized (different bunch crossing id). sending a “synch bunch crossing” command does not work (why ?!) → sending “trigger event” cmd get the bunch crossing id “closer” but sometimes a difference remains (up to 3 bx!) reading out in triggered mode (sending event trigger) shows peaks at different position while packets have the same bunch-crossing id. Probably the consequence of the header-payload mismatch. In the communicator: if number of events to acquire is larger than ~10000 then it looks like FPGA falls into an infinite loop where the same events are read continuously (still see peaks after switching off the pulse generator). To be verified. modify the loop over “software event” into a loop over “trigger event” more useful for us/DualSampa “fix synch problem” always addresses hadd = 0 and gives error if hadd=1 is selected (normal... but) message warning (since rev778) “ did not get end of packet stream marker” appears for each channel when selected channel is changed several times, program freezes 18juin2013, 9 papers out, #citations 72 pp 7Tev, 67JpsiPbPb, 32 muon 7TeV, 28 Jpsi pol, 26 jpsi pp 2.76, 24 muons PbPb, 20 Jpsi mult, 11 Jpsi Photo PbPb, 10 low masses Elliptic flow paper (Pb-Pb 2010) The observed similarity at RHIC and the LHC of pt-differential elliptic flow at low pt is consistent with predictions of hydrodynamic models.
