Representing problems with equations Almost as much fun as a bee sting in your nose and a lot less likely to make you scream in agony!

STEPS TO SUCCESS Draw a picture or strip diagram Label it Look at your diagram and ask, “Does it make sense for the word problem?” Write an expression that represents what you drew Remember to put parentheses if you have to do one step first

Problem 1 Lisa is cooking muffins. The recipe calls for 7 cups of sugar. She has already put in 2 cups. How many more cups does she need to put in? 7 2 x x = 7 - 2

Problem 2 How many packages of diapers can you buy with $40 if one package costs $8? 40 8 8 8 8 8 8 1 2 3 4 x x = 40 ÷ 8

Problem 3 Last Friday Trevon had $29. Over the weekend he received some money for cleaning the attic. He now has $41. How much money did he receive? 41 x 29 x = 41 - 29

Problem 4 Last week Luis ran 30 miles more than Mr. Sims. Mr. Sims ran 47 miles. How many miles did Luis run? L 30 Sims: 47 L = 30 + 47

All in all she watched 38 hours of cartoons in the last 2 weeks. How many hours of cartoons did she watch the week before last? 38 8 x x = 38 - 8

Problem 12 Brantley, Isa and Mazie found money buried in a field.They split the money evenly, each getting $24.28. How much money did they find? x 24.28 24.28 24.28 1 2 3 x = 24.28 ÷ 3
