Santiago High School Science Fair Presented by: Mrs. Espinosa No notes.

What is the California science fair? Click on title/link for a short youtube clip on the 2014 Ca state sci fair

When is Science Fair?? Santiago High School Jan.23rd, 2017 District Feb. 2017 County March-April 2017 State End of April 2017

Student Benefits College Science Fair Participation looks great when applying to college—even if you are not a Straight A student! Looks even better if you advance to district, county, or state! At the county and state levels there are numerous cash awards, prizes, and scholarships! No notes.

What do you need to do? Pick a group (up to 3 people or by yourself) Pick a Question. Turn in a Project Proposal sheet to Mrs. Espinosa Start working! No research report or binder required UNLESS you ADVANCE to district! Research Report only required if you ADVANCE to COUNTY

Your Topic How to Pick a Good Question The question should be interesting enough—you will be working with it for the next couple months. There should be at least three sources of written information on the subject. Make sure the experiment is safe to perform. Ensure there is enough time to do the experiment before the science fair. For example, most plants take weeks to grow. No notes.

Not sure what topic to pick?? www.sciencebuddies.org-- topic selection wizard http://cssf.usc.edu/-- projects that have gone to state; make them your own Myths! Labs from your science class—tweak them, extend them, more data!

The Display Traditional 3-sided board. Can be up to 9 feet tall and 4 feet wide! Doesn’t have to be traditional—could be a flat board

BOARDS!

Keys to a WINNING Project Interesting, unique topic (Santiago Science Fair teachers can help you with this!) Topic has a ‘real-world’ impact or relevance LOTS of DATA! Quality board, good 1st impression

How to Get Help Santiago will offer sessions during Office Hours to help with project ideas, research, experimenting, and making the board Sessions will begin in October Contact Mrs. Espinosa in P200 for questions, help, and ideas! If you plan on doing a project you must fill out a Project Proposal sheet and give to Mrs. Espinosa
