WORLDCAT DISCOVERY@MINTEK The New OPAC: WorldCat Discovery

WHAT IS WORLDCAT DISCOVERY? WorldCat Discovery lets you find everything you need with one simple search interface.  It’s a way for you to locate books, articles, journals, videos and other items of interest in your library or other libraries.  Through WorldCat Discovery, you can search the WorldCat database, which provides access to millions of items.  In addition, your library make other specialized databases available—such as articles or special collections. (EBSCO, ScienceDirect, SAePublications, McGraw Hill etc.) These searches (in WC Discovery) produce direct links to articles and other resources in these databases. To access these resources, though, you will be required to log in using your library membership, (Student/staff number & Password) to link to the full text of an article right from the Item Details screen. LIMITERS IN ADVANCED SEARCH Within Advanced Search, options to limit your search are available at the bottom of the screen. The available limiters depend on what content you are searching: a single database, multiple databases, WorldCat, and so forth. Note that Year and Location (Libraries Worldwide, etc.) are always available. Note: Search terms, indexes, and limiters do not persist when navigating from search results back to Advanced Search.

LIMIT SEARCH When searching a single database, limiters will appear in the following order (if they are available)  - Peer review  - Format  - Year  - Language  - Any other limiters in any order  - Location When searching multiple databases, limiters will appear in the following order:  - Peer review (if available)  - Format (as represented in WorldCat.org)  - Year  - Location

SEARCH GUIDELINES Several techniques are available for searching.

KEYWORD SEARCH A keyword search uses one or more complete words that are contained anywhere in the item's record, including: titles, notes, abstracts, summaries, descriptions and subjects. Keywords can also be names of people and places that are the subjects of a library resource or a listing in a directory. You can enter words in upper or lower case, and if you use multiple words you can enter them in any order.

BOOLEAN OPERATORS Boolean operators allow you to group, include, or exclude certain terms in your search. You can use these operators: AND + OR | NOT - “ “ ( )

PHRASE SEARCH A phrase search uses quotation marks “ “ to allow an exact match to the phrase Or use = eg. ti=blood chemistry au=John Smith

WILDCARDS Wildcards are special characters used to represent additional characters in a search term. They are useful when you are unsure of spelling, when there are alternate spellings, or when you only know part of a term. You can use these two wildcards: ? # Pound sign (#).   The pound sign, also called a number sign or hash mark, represents a single character. See the examples below:

TRUNCATION Truncation allows you to search for a term and its variations by entering a minimum of the first three letters of the term followed by a question mark symbol (?) or an asterisk (*). Examples:

REFERENCING Cite/export

REFERENCING In WC Discovery there is the ability to generate bibliographic citations for the displayed work. To copy or export a citation, click Cite/Export within WCD item details. A pop-up window provides citations from citation styles. Highlight and copy the citation you need and paste it into a word-processor document or e-mail. Make sure that none of the citation's text formatting has been lost in the process. You can also export a citation for the individual item in popular formats such as EndNote, Refworks and Zotera & Mendeley.

REFERENCING: CITATION PROCEDURE A to Z list

EXPORT TO ENDNOTE You must have EndNote® installed on your computer. If you select EndNote and have the software installed on your computer, the application should automatically launch and accept the exported file. To export to EndNote bibliographic software: Note: If you do not have EndNote installed, a File Download window opens asking if you want to save the file or find a program online to open it. If you choose to save, a file with the extension .ris is provided.

EXPORT TO MENDELEY

A TO Z LIST eResources

A TO Z LIST https://mintek.on.worldcat.org/atoztitles Save staff time with an integrated link resolver and a built-in A-to-Z list when your library’s data is present in the WorldCat knowledge base. This allows your users to quickly connect to the full-text content you own and license. It also connects users to full-text resources through open-access collections such as Hathi Trust, JSTOR, Project Gutenberg and others.
