Basic Expectations Assignment is due on Tuesday. This will count as a TEST grade Put some effort into it, turn in something you’re proud of. Must be submitted and shared with me on the google drive. Content must be used in creative ways. Simply copying definitions straight from your notecards will be just like saying, “hey would you please give me a zero for this?”

#1 - Children’s story book (minimum 500 words) Must include an actual story line, characters and dialogue. I should be able to read this to a child as an actual bedtime story. #2 - Journal entry (must include a minimum of 10 entries) Finished product must look like an actual journal Written from the perspective of DNA #3 - Write a letter from one DNA strand to another or from DNA to any of the cell’s organelles. (minimum 500 words) Written from the perspective of DNA. The letter must be about a dilemma or drama situation going on in the life of DNA #4 - Create a basic scientific essay describing how your vocabulary terms relate to one another. (minimum 500 words) Must include an introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs.

Can your genetic code be influenced by your environment? Essential Question Can your genetic code be influenced by your environment? Standard B.6D – Recognize that gene expression is a regulated process

Temperature & Gene Expression

Water level affects the size of the leaves. Phenotypes are always affected by their environment. In buttercup (Ranunculus peltatus), leaves below water-level are finely divided and those above water-level are broad, floating, photosynthetic leaf-like leaves. Siamese cats are darker on their extremities, due to temperature effects on phenotypic expression. Expression of phenotype is a result of interaction between genes and environment. Siamese cats and Himalayan rabbits both animals have dark colored fur on their extremities. This is caused by an allele that controls pigment production being able only to function at the lower temperatures of those extremities. Environment determines the phenotypic pattern of expression. http://www.emc.maricopa.edu/faculty/farabee/biobk/BioBookgeninteract.html Leaves above water are broad, below the water-level are finely divided

pH affects color. Acidic soil produces blue flowers and Alkaline soil produces pink.

After each video, create a 40 word quickwrite (minimum) in your bellwork journal answering the following question……. “What role did the environment have on the expression of the genes?”

Twin Studies Video What is the genetic make up of identical twins? What have we found out about the expression of the genes in twins? http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/body/epigenetics.html http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=15629096
