A Journey Through The Psalms Wisdom From God A Journey Through The Psalms

The Bible Within The Bible The Psalms in many ways are the heart of all Scripture. Lyric poetry – an expression of the emotions of the poet. Moral law, history, worship, prophecy, wisdom, life applications.

Five Books Of The Psalter Book one – Psalms 1-41 Book two – Psalms 42-72 Book three – Psalms 73-89 Book four – Psalms 90-106 Book five – Psalms 107-150 Each ends with a doxology

The Doxologies Psalm 41:13 – “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and Amen.” Psalm 72:18-19 – “Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who alone works wonders. And blessed be His glorious name forever; and may the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen, and Amen.

The Doxologies Psalm 89:52 – “Blessed be the Lord, forever! Amen and Amen.” Psalm 106:48– “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting even to everlasting. And let all the people say, ‘Amen.’ Praise the Lord!” Psalm 150:6 – “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!”

The Authors Around 73 Psalms written by David. Possibly more. Strong evidence indicates that David originated the Psalter. Many psalms carry attribution: David, Solomon, Asaph, sons of Korah, even Moses (Psalm 90).

Psalm 1 – The Blessed Man How blessed is the man… Not just men – women too. Blessed = ESHER, synonymous with NT MAKAIRIOS Blissful, deeply blessed, abiding happiness.

Three Parallel Doublets Verse 1: “How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers!” Negatives that are positive Digression of action Method of assimilation

The Positives Verse 2-3 – “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.”

The Transplanted Tree Like = simile. A direct comparison between the righteous man and a tree. Deep roots and plentiful supply of water. No withering. Dependable fruitfulness. Perpetual prosperity.

Psalm 1 – The Wicked Man Verse 4 – “The wicked are not so… Everything mentioned above is null and void for the wicked person. The wicked do the exact opposite of the blessed man. In fact, they are the ones enticing the righteous to walk, stand, and sit in their counsel.

From Tree To Chaff Verse 4 – “…But they are like chaff which the wind drives away. Definite downgrading of experience. From florid tree to dried out wind-blown chaff.

Impending Judgment Verse 5 – “Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.” Luke 13:28 – “In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out.”

God Knows His Own Verse 6: “For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.” God knows which is which. God knows whether or not we delight in His law. Or mediate on it. God knows whether we are staying pure or hobnobbing with the unholy. Which will it be?
