FAMILY TREE CURRICULUM with SANDBOX, LESSONS and VIDEOS 2 Sep 2013

This is Elder Leland Moon's undated bio from the web written when we were using new family search: Leland Moon became interested in genealogy when he was 12 years old and has been an avid genealogist ever since. He taught Physical Sciences and computer skills in the public schools for 30 years. While a student at BYU, and after graduation, he was a volunteer at the BYU Library and was involved in coordinating Sunday workshops and doing consultant training. He has taken many semester hours of genealogy classes at BYU and other locations. He has served for 5 years as a church service missionary at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, and has served many years in the local family history center. One of his chief responsibilities is teaching and developing curriculum for new FamilySearch

Family Tree Curriculum was developed by Leland Moon Family Tree Curriculum was developed by Leland Moon. It is the place where you can learn and watch videos to help you master Family Tree. It's a great place to steer a patron to when they have a question.

They can play in the Sandbox by using the lessons so they don't mess up the Family Tree or they can just watch the videos. Have fun with it.

Family Tree Curriculum is set up to use the lessons and videos while playing in the Sandbox The videos can be watched without the lessons or using the sandbox.

Lessons are to be used with the Sandbox. As we learned in the video The Sandbox is a Family Tree program run with fake data. It's fun to play in because you aren't messing up your own people in the Family Tree program. The data is designed so that everyone who gets an account will see the same kind of data. The last names, dates, and places will be different, but the first names and relationships are all the same.

Lessons 1 - 5 you use your real account, except part of Lesson 5 will be in the sandbox. You need to log in. To log in to the Sandbox click Sandbox Level 1 This is the site it goes to. It logs you into a fake Family Tree. https://training.familysearch.org/tree The first time you go into the SANDBOX the computer makes the fake account. There is a 2 minute wait before the sandbox account will show. It seems longer.

Best of all, when you are finished playing in the Sandbox or you mess up the file so bad that it is not longer usable, you can reset the file and start over.

This is what the fake Sandbox might look like Looks pretty real!

There are 11 individualized lessons that anyone can do to learn all of the basic and intermediate functions of Family Tree. Most written lessons have several videos that when used together give the best experience. However, many individuals prefer just to watch the videos or just to do the written material. Some people do the whole set of lessons and then come back and review when they run into a problem and others only look at the material when they experience a problem and do not know what to do.

More examples of lessons and videos (or movies) in Family Tree Curriculum Watch the videos by clicking on each video or you can download the video by clicking here.

Get your ear phones on at the library to listen to the videos or be sure to watch at home. You will get many answers and insights about FamilySearch Family Tree to help you with your own tree and you will be able to help the patrons. Have you all noticed the print icon on the pedigree view to print the pedigree of whoever you have in the bow tie position on your pedigree? That's what someone learned when she watched one of the videos. Maybe you can learn or find something to share with a patron or one of us. Enjoy your videos...........
