What is maths? Teach to count then we take away the numbers then we make it totally incomprehensible – all the time we tell them – maths is fun!

This is maths To me – this is maths. Pont de Normandie – if been on it, exciting ride. How do they know that if you are in a heavy lorry at the bottom, you have the power in the engine to get to the top? Whats more, if you are at the top, how do they know that the brakes are strong enough to stop you at the bottom? What an extraordinary feat of engineering – how many metal bars do they need to be the strings that hold the bridge up? How thick? How strong? How did they make the curve? How do they know that a car going at 70mph has the steering ability to stay on the road and not fly off? How string do the crash barriers have to be? Where are the weak spot? I’ll try to avoid them!

I spent 12 hours in one of these recently – how extraordinary that they can cater for 300 people for 12 hours whilst 5 miles in the air? Its 57 metres long, 16 metres high, wingspan 60 metres an weighs 110 tonnes empty and 220 tonnes full. It travels at 600 miles per hour for hours an hours. 9000 aeroplanes in sky at 9.00am Weds morning – how come they don’t crash? Is the sky big enough?

Should you study Advanced Level Maths? Maths - Set 1 pupils should be able to easily cope with Advanced Level Mathematics – but you will need to score at least a “7” at GCSE to qualify for the course. Set 2 pupils will find Advanced level Maths difficult but with hard work may well cope. You will need a “7” at GCSE to qualify for the course

Should you study Further Maths? You will need to be one of the top 15 students in your class and you will need to be a top set student. We advise very strongly that you only take this course if you achieve an “8” or “9” at GCSE.
