Social Polices and Social Welfare Administration Presented by Enobong U. Ndekhedehe

Source Neugeboren, Bernard (2014) “Social Polices and Social Welfare Administration,” The Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare: Vol. 6: Iss2, article 4. Available at: http://scholarworks.wmich.edu/jssw/vol6/iss2/4

Introduction This review critically reviews the article “Social Polices and Social Welfare Administration,” The Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare. I will first summarize the article, look at the effectiveness of the article’s structure, and examine how the information is set out and whether the reader can access it efficiently. Finally, I will criticize the article, assessing its authority, currency, accuracy, objectivity and coverage. As well as judging the article’s accessibility and credibility. For me, the article was well written and very informative, clear and relevant to professionals, policy-makers and students.

Article Summary The purpose of the article is to find a way that will stop substituting efficiency for effective by stressing social policy as an essential part of social welfare administration. This will help in the implementation of social welfare program and welfare administration. The article suggested the lines of studies that will equip a manager to be able to manage social welfare programs efficiently and effectively. The article mentioned that it is better to integrate the knowledge of social policy with understanding of theory and practice of management and administration decision-making because it will elude overemphasis on means to the disadvantage of the goals and social programs. Also that master program in administration should be developed that will help a social work middle management workers to acquire a practice that combines social policy and administration else, we will continue to substitute efficacy for effective in social program.

Article Structure The article was introduced with an abstract, which provided the stance or thesis developed by the article as well as a brief overview of main points. There was no method used to conduct this study shared, however, the sentences were easy to understand, terms were explained to the understanding of the reader. There were several headings with a lot of information in each; several other articles were cited throughout the text. The article does not convey conventional way of conducting a research. It was more of literature review. The abstract and conclusion gave a good recap of the article with a great summary of the main points. References were not left out as they were cited all over the body of the study and at the reference section. The structure of this article was more of academic work and not for program implementation. At the beginning, it was exciting to read but towards the end, it became cumbersome because of too many information which was not step by step approach but more of literature review work. The article was a scanned PDF document, the font and size used was not very good although it was easily accessed because it was published in an open access journal. In all, it was able to achieve it purpose of finding a way to integrate social policy in a social welfare administration.

Article critique Authority: The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare is an open access journal published quarterly to help in understanding social welfare by translating social science knowledge, methodology and technology to solving problems of social policy and politics, social ecology as well as social services. The author’s credibility in writing this article was established in the sense that he is an academic staff in the graduate School of Social Work, Rutgers University; whose interest is in social work education and social welfare administration and has done related study in the past “Evaluation of Field Education for Social Welfare Administration”. In this article, he has cited several other authors to support his study and findings.

Accuracy The sources of the information in the article are in 1960s and 1970s researches and paper presentations at various conferences supported with huge references with their sources cited all over to support the entire work. The publishing of the article in the journal of sociology and social work in the recent edition also supported its accuracy because this will help the subscribers of this journal to understand more of social welfare and how its social science knowledge, methodology and technology can be promoted to solving problems of social policy and politics, social ecology as well as social services.

Currency The journal is hosted by Western Michigan University, volume 6 Issue 2 March, published in December 2014, the study is very recent though cited more of 1960s and 1970s works.

Relevance The article has high reliability in an academic environment like I said earlier; it is more of academic work than for program implementation. It is meant to inform everyone for example professionals, policy-makers and students. It will be very relevant to Social Welfare Program Managers, Institutional Leaders, Social Workers as well as Policy- makers.

Objectivity: The information was factually written, supported with huge studies and numerous references. The article was straight to the point in its suggestions of the kind of studies and at what level it should be done that will make impact. It specifically said that Ph.D. program in administration will not be useful at implementation level rather at University level.

Stability The article, with its source an academic journal on an academic data base is stable as a resource.

Conclusion The review of this article was very tasking; however, every aspect was reviewed. It was worthwhile because I finally gained a lot from this work. Initially, I though P.hD level of education is the best in program implementation but now I know better which made me appreciate my Master’s program better. The article has contributed to the body of existing knowledge.

Thank you
