The Atlantic hurricane season is June – November. Non coastal cities feel the effects of hurricanes from heavy winds, rains, falling trees and power outages. The northern regions of Georgia also deal with seasonable snow. The piedmont region receives snow every few years. Snow storms usually occur in January and February.

President Eisenhower, who had seen the benefits of the German Autobahn during WWII, promoted the building of the nation’s interstate highways systems project. Georgia has 1,344 miles of interstate highway. An example of one of GA’s interstates is I-95. It connects Georgia to 16 states and cities such as Miami, Richmond, Washington D.C., New York and Boston I-75 connects Georgia to Chattanooga, Cincinnati, and Detroit. Hartsfield Jackson International Airport Hartsfield-Jackson International airport is considered the “busiest” airport in the nation. Flights from Atlanta go to five continents in less than two stops. The airport has 32 separate airlines. The Atlanta airport provides jobs for the state of Georgia through, MARTA, taxi-cab drivers, rental car employees, and other people that work in the airport.
Georgia’s Deepwater Ports The Georgia Port Authority promotes international business. Brunswick and Savannah are home to Georgia’s two deep water ports. In the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries and during the WWI and WWII, Brunswick port was a major export site for cotton, naval stores, lumber, timber, and Liberty ships. Today, Brunswick’s three terminals bring in General cargo, dry bulk commodities, seafood and automobiles including Jaguar, Porsche, and Volvo. During WWII, the port at Brunswick was used to build naval ships. Automobiles, container cargo including Target and Ikea and many other items are imported and exported from Savannah’s ports.

Railroads Georgia’s railroads were built to link cities like Athens, Augusta, and Savannah. Georgia’s cities and towns including Atlanta (aka Terminus) were created due to the early railroads. Railroads dominated transportation in the states for 90 years. Interstate highway systems lead to the decline or railroads. There are 5,000 miles of tracks that remain today.
