Discovering Disciplines- Paraphrase Week 2, Wednesday

Paraphrasing What is it? Discuss.

Paraphrasing Paraphrasing is writing the ideas of another person in your own words. You need to change the words and the structure but keep the meaning the same. You must acknowledge it. It can be the same length, shorter or longer. It may be just a small part of a text linked to other ideas and other references. It is used to support ideas in academic writing.

INTERDISCIPLINARITY What does ‘interdisciplinary’ mean?

Definition of interdisciplinarity Interdisciplinarity means combining ideas, data and information, methods, concepts, and/or theories from two or more different disciplines in order to achieve a goal or solve a problem. Adapted from http://www.uk.sagepub.com/upm-data/43242_1.pdf

Why is interdisciplinarity important?

What is the link between interdisciplinarity and creativity? ‘Creativity depends on interactions between feeling and thinking, and across different disciplinary boundaries and fields of ideas.’ (Robinson, 2011, p.2).

Example 1: interdisciplinarity Which disciplines might be combined in order to solve this problem linked to disease? Biomedicine, Computer Modelling, Economics, Politics and another language.

Task 2- Compare the paraphrases with the original Which is the best paraphrase ? Why? Underline any phrases that are almost the same as the original . Make a list of the paraphrasing techniques used in the good paraphrase.

Task 3- Reading 1. Now read the second of UCL’s examples of interdisciplinarity: 2. Make some notes on the content of the paragraph. Write down some synonyms/ useful language phrases.

Paraphrasing What is the difference between summarising and paraphrasing? What are the necessary steps required in making a good paraphrase?

Task 4 –Group Writing- Paraphrase Discuss the techniques you know about to help you paraphrase. Make a note of the techniques.

Stages for Paraphrasing read & highlight important points take some notes reread discuss to check comprehension put out of sight write your own version use synonyms change word forms change structure compare to original. check that meaning is the same check that phrases from the original have not been used Order that individuals do this procedure in will vary.

Compare the original text with its paraphrase You may notice that the disease spreads more where people live in close communities or have a particular diet. Http://www.ucl.ac.uk/basc/faq/interdisciplinarity It might be observed that infection tend to increase when neighbouring societies eat specific types of food.

Task 4- Possible paraphrase Art historians may wish to discover more about artists from the past. By obtaining a painter’s original work, they might uncover something about the composition of the paint and the canvas and also relate the paintings to other works from the same time period. The combination of disciplines required to access this information could lead to a better comprehension of the life and creations of a wonderful painter (UCL, 2013). Show this after students have attempted their own paraphrase. Get them to note the formal style and use of caution as well as the way it is paraphrased.
