Tools for Teaching and Learning: Digital Storytelling Rebecca M. Reese, Ph.D.

Objectives Describe and incorporate digital storytelling as a teaching and learning tool. Create a storyboard for production. Use desktop or web-based applications to create a digital story for use in a course.

What is Digital Storytelling? Combines the art of telling a story with a mix of multimedia to present information about a specific topic. Revolves around a theme and often contains a particular viewpoint.

Types of Digital Stories Personal Narrative - revolve around significant life events and personally meaningful; can be emotionally charged. Examination of Historical themes and events – can incorporate historical photographs, newspaper headlines, speeches, and other media to add depth and meaning to events. Information or instruction relevant to a subject - convey instructional material in from different areas and can serve as how-to help.

Storyboarding Share your vision with others. Establish plan of production or through line. Reduces creation time.
