Back to the Books

Now that the new year is upon us, it is important to get in a good routine, budgeting time daily for both studying and other activities. You cannot play basketball, soccer, football, etc…, forever. Education is the building block for your future~!!! Re-invest and Re-invent in yourself!!!

Make the most of it! Here are a few simple study tips-stay focused in class, take good notes and study or read every evening. Even if you do not have any “homework” and regardless of your age, study and read nightly.

Note-Taking Tips Your notes are a reminder of what you learned in class. Taking good notes can help you succeed in science. These tips will help you take better notes. Be an active listener. Listen for important concepts. Pay attention to words, examples, and/or diagrams your teacher emphasizes.

Note-Taking Tips Write your notes as clear and concise as possible. The following symbols and abbreviations may be helpful in your note-taking.

What Do I.e. and E.g. Mean? I.e. and e.g. are both abbreviations for Latin terms. I.e. stands for id est and means roughly "that is." E.g. stands for exempli gratia.

How to Remember the Difference Between I.e. and E.g. I'm going to give you a memory trick. So here's how I remember the difference. Forget about i.e. standing for "that is" or whatever it really means in Latin. From now on, i.e., which starts with i, means “in other words,” and e.g., which starts with e, means “for example.” I = in other words. E= example.

egg sample I like card games, e.g., bridge and crazy eights. Because I used e.g., you know that I have provided a list of examples of card games that I like. It's not a finite list of all card games I like; it's just a few examples.

in essence On the other hand, i.e. means “in other words,” so you use it to introduce a further clarification: I like to play cards, i.e., bridge and crazy eights. Because I used i.e., which introduces a clarification, you know that these are the only card games that I enjoy.

Note-Taking Tips Word or Phrase Symbol or Abbreviation For example e.g. That is i.e. With w/ Without w/o

Note-Taking Tips Word or Phrase Symbol or Abbreviation And + Approximately ≈ Versus vs

Note-Taking Tips Use a symbol such as a star ( ) or an asterisk (*) to emphasis important concepts. Place a question mark (?) next to anything that you do not understand. Ask questions and participate in class discussion. Draw and label pictures or diagrams to help clarify a concept.

Note Taking Tips Keep notes neat. They’ll be easier to study from. Listen 80% of the time; write 20% of the time. Use your own words, not your teachers’. Your learn more.

Note Taking Tips Write in shorthand. Use abbreviations. Make summaries, outlines, diagrams or maps of the subject.

Note-Taking Don'ts Don’t write every word. Concentrate on the main ideas and concepts. Don’t use someone else’s notes as they may not make sense. Don’t doodle. It distracts you from listening actively. Don’t lose focus or you will become lost in your note-taking.
