The Crucifixion The crucifixion was when Jesus was nailed to a cross by the Jews and Romans. According to the gospels, the main charge against Jesus was that he claimed to be the king of the Jews. The Jewish council wanted Jesus dead because he was causing lots of political and social trouble.

Key Beliefs and Teachings The death and resurrection of Jesus is at the very heart of the Christian faith. For Christian's it is through his death that people's broken relationship with God (the fall caused by Adam and Eve) is restored in Christianity this is known as the Atonement. Jesus' death is seen to have saved humanity and everyone's sins were forgiven this is evident in the New Testament when John the Baptist describes Jesus as "the lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world". (John 1:29)

Extracts from the Bible Mark 15:21-41 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). 38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[c] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”

How the event is important to Christian worship Christians believe the death of Jesus by crucifixion symbolises an agreement with God to forgive humans for their sins. The manner in which Jesus died is almost as significant as his death. Jesus' incredible self sacrifice to gain redemption for others "the righteous dying for the unrighteous" as stated by Grace Communion International, is a powerful image of Christian faith. The crucifixion represents not only Jesus' death, but rules for everyday Christian living. Last bullet point: Christians believe they bear their own cross every day that they venture into the world and reject the sinful practices and passions they may encounter.

Christian worship Good Friday Good Friday is the Friday before Easter Sunday. It commemorates the execution of Jesus by crucifixion. Good Friday is a day of mourning in church. In some countries, there are special Good Friday processions, or re-enactments of the Crucifixion. The main service on Good Friday takes place between midday and 3pm. In many churches it takes the form of a meditation based on the seven last words of Jesus on the cross, with hymns, prayers, and short sermons. Differing Christian Views On The Crucifixion The cross in Christianity represents suffering and defeat but also triumph and salvation. Roman Catholics and the Eastern Orthodox think that the crucifixion was a symbol of salvation. The crucifix was derived from the sacrificial death of Jesus which is especially important in Roman Catholic Churches but not so much in Protestant Denominations. It's important that Christians remember the crucifixion because it emphasises the sacrifices made for mankind.
