Carole Johnson MCSP Cert Ed The Future's Bright; the Future's Column - 'crowd sourcing' technique evidence and the development of the NBE journal Carole Johnson MCSP Cert Ed

National Back Exchange - Column Comparing results to the last survey in 2011; 25% more members read most of the articles 90% rate the Column as excellent /good but with a 15% shift from good to excellent The Column is being used more by members for training and keeping up to date There is a gradual move to wanting column digitally Many more readers have smartphones (increase of 41%) and tablets (increase of 66%)

POETs Portfolio Of Evidenced Techniques

POETs Thank you to the Scottish Manual Handling for the input into the first stage.

POETs The Tools

POETs REBA QEC Likert Scales Functional Independence Measure Risk Matrix Effort ( Borg) Skill (Dreyfus/Benner)

POETs form...

FIM 7 Complete Independence All of the tasks described as making up the activity are typically performed safely, without modification, assistive devices, or aids, and within a reasonable time 6 Modified Independence Activity requires any one or more than one of the following: an assistive device, more than reasonable time, or there are safety (risk) considerations. 5 Supervision or Setup Subject requires no more help than standby, cuing or coaxing, without physical contact. Or, helper sets up needed items or applies orthoses. 4 Minimal Contact Assistance With physical contact the subject requires no more help than touching, and subject expends 75% or more of the effort. 3 Moderate Assistance Subject requires more help than touching, or expends half (50%) or more (up to 75%) of the effort. 2 Maximal Assistance Subject expends less than 50% of the effort, but at least 25%. 1 Total Assistance Subject expends less than 25% of the effort.

Risk Matrix

Effort (Borg)

Skill

Quick Exposure Checklist (QEC) Assess the changes in exposure to musculoskeletal risk factors of the back, shoulders and arms, hands, wrists and neck before and after an ergonomic intervention Involve the practitioner (i.e the observer) who conducts the assessment and the worker who has direct experience of the task Indicate change in exposure scores following and intervention

REBA REBA SCORES 1 negligible risk 2 or 3 low risk, change may be needed 4 to 7 medium risk, further investigation, change soon 8 to 10 high risk, investigate and implement change 11+ very high risk, implement change

Let’s Go...

POETs so far… Slide Sheets – 4 Methods (Bangs & Baird 2014) Maybe some of our difficulties in reaching professional agreement on a particular technique is simply attributable to using non-comparable equipment, maybe we are just not comparing like with like in our discussions Although I wanted to get numerical evidence, human factors seem to play a more significant role in our technique preference, than a perceived reduction in a risk of injury to ourselves or the patient. For example, being able to see the patient and each other while performing the technique was often noted in the comments boxes as important as was ‘feeling’ comfortable before, during and after the task.
