Gas Schedules 2004 - 2007

I am sure everybody in the experiments feels - as we do - the increasing work load already today.

What is the Situation ? CMS: (3xMuons) ATLAS: (4xMuons + 2xTRT) MUON EDR, PRR done. (Paperwork in a good state.) TRT pending. (EDR + PRR may be this Summer) Manpower: construction should be done with PJAS. (not found for the moment.) Component purity critical. Undefined areas: RPC purifier MDT purifier, humidity in gas ? TRT systems (active gas + gas cooling) CMS: (3xMuons) EDR done (no PRR). (Paperwork minimal, but good and easy cooperation with CMS) Production of Distribution racks (going well) Installation handled by CMS (piping contract) Undefined areas: RPC purifier Could cause delays!

What is the Situation ? Cont. ALICE: (3 big recirc.+ 5 single pass systems) TPC construction going well (finished Summer 2003) (Orders often blocked bc Budget in the red ) PRR done except for TRD and TOF (follow this Summer) Paperwork minimal; designs not all complete; cost and manpower definition not finalized. LHCb: (2 Standard + 2 Special (RICH) systems) MUON system design okay (could be final by June 2003) OT (to be revised before Summer 2003) RICH 1 (should have started, but C4F10 availability uncertain in the future.) RICH 2 tests on membranes have started. Design specs, cost estimates need update, no manpower estimates yet. No clear agreement for construction manpower !

Gas Installation Periods

Remarks on the Installation Schedule: Serious congestion from end 2004 until early 2006 for us. From the plan our work would be essentially finished in Spring 2006 (one year before start-up !). We would like to get to a more consistent milestone plan across the experiments. If an activity is late, what happens to the following installations ? The schedule is so tight that we must reduce other work, i.e. support work and development activities.

Manpower The integration of external manpower is a great concern! More and more groups want to do pipe work with people they send to us. Guidelines for external: "pipe workers" and "cablers": Pipe workers should have experience with gas equipment and must be able to weld pipes, and hold or acquire the required welding permits (European Standard EN-287-1); Cablers should have basic electrical education (electrician, or equivalent). They should be able to connect gas system components with the control equipment from a cabling plan. They must speak either French or English. They should stay on long-term mission (> 12 months), and they must be integrable in the serial module construction. The number of external persons shouldn’t exceed 3 or 4 at any given time. The integration of external manpower is a great concern!

Suggestions to optimize the Schedules: Let us know: What are your constrains and priorities? What are the modules, that might not be needed at the first instance ? What is the part of the work that can be scheduled in 2006 ? Clarify urgently the uncertainties on manpower availability and component purity. Should we define a policy of how to react onto schedule shifts or delays ? Minimize deviations from established standards for all systems ! Piping connections of Distribution racks should be done within the “detector piping” contract (example CMS). Mostly ATLAS (for now!) Mostly TA1
