Monett High School MOD Scheduling Overview

Previous Reality Traditional 8 period day – 45 minutes for each class Freshmen had an ‘Academy’ class daily, but no other advisories existed. Drawbacks Course conflicts Lack of intervention/enrichment time All courses designed the same Little opportunity to teach students time-management and prioritization skills

Why a Modular (MOD) Schedule? Intervention Allows students access to teachers during the school day for remediation and enrichment Flexibility Allows courses to be structured according to instructional need Research Based Learning should occur both in and out of class to be effective Variety prevents stagnation/boredom Student centered Encourages student ownership and responsibility

MOD Schedule Philosophy The schedule repeats itself every 5 days rather than every day Courses are designed to be delivered efficiently and effectively Students have access to teachers DURING school hours Students have choice Prioritizing upcoming activities Managing their own time Skill we want kids to have but do little to help them develop it.

Resource Time Students must check in at a Resource Center. 6 different centers available. Four Core Two “Incentive” Time to collaborate with other students, get help from a teacher, or just work on academic assignments. The goal is for an individual student to have more resource time each year of high school. Freshmen do more work in their classes while seniors do more work on their own.

MHS Mod Schedule Template Time A Day B Day C Day D Day E Day 1 8:00-8:25 2 8:25-8:50 3 8:50 – 9:15 4 9:15 – 9:40 5 9:40 – 10:05 6 10:05 – 10:30 7 10:30 – 10:55 8 10:55 – 11:20 9 11:20 – 11:45 10 11:45 – 12:10 11 12:10 – 12:35 12 12:35 – 1:00 13 1:00 - 1:25 14 1:25 – 1:50 15 1:50 – 2:15 16 2:15 – 2:40 17 2:40 - 3:10 17 MODS– 25 minutes in length Course sections may be 25, 50, 75, or 100 minutes 1 MOD scheduled for lunch Time flexible to meet curricular and learning needs Rotational Schedule to address shortened weeks and ensure continuous instructional cycle.

Sample Freshman Schedule Resource times and Lunch times fill out the schedule This student would have 14 resource periods throughout the week.

Sample Senior Schedule Seven courses enrolled. 32 Resource MODS per week. What’s next???

Sample Junior GOCAPS Schedule Six courses enrolled, including 3 credit GOCAPS. 10 Resource MODS per week. Class Conflicts

Sample Teacher Schedule

Challenges Facility modifications – creating large group space and resource centers Teachers – share classrooms In some courses students have multiple teachers Attendance – has been biggest challenge Passing time – No bells Building the schedule itself Balancing student supervision and student tutoring in resource Building the “culture” of resource

Striving to prepare students for THEIR future! Purposes PROVIDE remediation and enrichment during school day PREPARE students for life after high school PROMOTE collaboration among students and teachers PERMIT student ownership of their own education Striving to prepare students for THEIR future!
