NA2 - Partner Review Prague, 27-28 November ‘07 ITALIAN FEDERATION: INFN Giuseppina Salente INFN - (EGEEII - NA2)

The Italian federation counts 2 partners involved in NA2: INFN Metaware Our respective dissemination activities have been so far quite indipendent. INFN has privileged the contacts with final users related to science, trying to spread out the Grid paradigm and the utility of the e-infrastructure among as many communities as possible. Contacts with industry and institutional environments are, as well, heavily carried out, even in the context of realizing an Italian Grid Initiative (NGI) formally recognized as a point of reference for further grid developments and as an interface for the EGI. INFN The National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) is the Italian Public Institution dedicated to the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and conducts theoretical and experimental research in the fields of subnuclear, nuclear, particle, astroparticle and theoretical physics. INFN is organized in 20 divisions, sited at major local University Physics Department, 4 National Laboratories whose facilities are used by the national and international scientific community and 1 Center for Computing and Communication Technology. INFN Workforce currently consists of about 2000 employees, almost 2000 university researchers involved in the activities carried out by the Institute and 1300 young researchers, including undergraduate and graduate students as well as research fellows. INFN-GRID The INFN-Grid project is the general container for all grid related activities of the Institute INFN-Grid plays a key role in the worldwide process of innovation, development and production of Grid services and infrastructures with strong involvement in all major Grid projects, in terms of both thematic and regional extension. INFN-Grid has played a prime role in the CERN based LCG and WLCG projects. It is active in the EGEE and EGEE II project, and in the grid infrastructure extension projects like EUmedGRID, EUChinaGRID, EU-IndiaGrid and EELA, GridCC and BioinfoGRID. More than 150 people are involved in the INFN-Grid related projects, half of them are UE or other grid projects funded. To change: View -> Header and Footer

INFN and EGEE2 44 INFN people are involved in EGEE II, widely committed to almost all EGEE II activities 3 persons are dedicated to NA2, covering almost all the tasks, for a total of 0,5FTE funded and 0,25FTE unfunded. Very intense is the cooperation with the INFN NA3 and NA5 members. To change: View -> Header and Footer

TNA2.1 Media Relations: NA2.1 Task VERY CRITICAL: Very hard to catch press, TV or radio attention on our issues. Language of press releases is too difficult to be understood by even more experienced journalists. Too many technical information. News are considered of no impact at all on large public, too distant from people’s interest. SUGGESTION: we could think to organize some lessons, face to face meetings or other similar occasions for journalists in order to encourage more interest and develop some awareness in grid related issues. TNA2.2 Industrial and Governmental Relations NA2.2 Task TNA2.2 Industrial and Governmental Relations A very intense effort is being invested in this task, although achievements are not so easy to reach. INFN-NA2 people are closely cooperating with the INFN-Grid management in the organization of meetings in order to raise interest in the grid paradigm at a national level, in view of the NGI to be recognized as the national Grid point of reference for Italy and for the EGI. TNA2.3 Production of Promotional Materials NA2.3 Task TNA2.3 Production of Promotional Materials This is the most active and successful task. We have been producing brochures, leaflets, posters and all sorts of attractive graphics in order to disseminate the grid paradigm and the EGEE infrastructure among students, users, new users and researchers from other applications besides the HEP ones. Large distribution has been made among all key characters of the political and governmental environment. Interesting feedback from students who ask to attend our schools (see up-coming slides), researchers who try through the GILDA portal the Grid. To change: View -> Header and Footer

NA2.3 Task Some Posters To change: View -> Header and Footer

NA2.5 Task TNA2.5 User Relations and Websites Localized content taken from official EGEE Website Approximately 400 Visitors per month kept updated with News, Events and new Promotional Material (when not overloaded by other tasks work) Most but not all translations done: critical the effort to translate all infosheets and press releases. It would need more dedicated human resources. TNA2.6 Event Organization and Attendance NA2.6 Task TNA2.6 Event Organization and Attendance Very strong the INFN-NA2 effort in this task. Events Attendance Large participation of all INFN grid involved people to the events organized by EGEE (conferences and UF), with active contributions with poster, talks and various presentations. To change: View -> Header and Footer

TNA2.6 Event Organization and Attendance NA2.6 Task TNA2.6 Event Organization and Attendance Event Organization Strong collaboration in the organization of tutorials; Internal meetings SCHOOLS Activated two schools (full immersion courses) aiming at: the dissemination of the grid paradigm investigating researchers interest and support them in the migration of scientific applications on INFN and EGEE Grid. Presenting g-Lite and the various types of User Interface, such as UI Virtual, Grid Portal Genius, Grid2Win. Promote awareness in students and new users http://www.infn.it/CCR/formazione/scuole_grid.htm#corso1 http://www.infn.it/CCR/formazione/scuole_grid.htm#corso2 To change: View -> Header and Footer

NA2.6 Task TNA2.6 Event Organization and Attendance Exhibition: SC07 (Reno, Nevada 12-17 Nov.2007) Heavy involvement in the organization of the booth (EGEE-GrNET- INFN) at SC07. Produced all graphics Exhibited many posters Distributed promotional materials (leaflets and brochures) Presented various high quality demo live. Elements of success: a fair attendance of general public: keep in mind that SC is a very competitive exhibition environment. Critical: the collaboration of other NA2 partners (mostly absent) To change: View -> Header and Footer

CONCLUSIONS CRITICAL POINTS AND SUGGESTIONS NA2 management requires too many and frequent reports. Ok for the QR, but a weekly one is impossible to issue, for two reasons: Not enough time to dedicate weekly Not too much to say weekly: we do not produce large consume products, neither we sell stocks and bonds: we produce e- infrastructure and try to make people aware of it. It’s a hard task, not easy to accomplish in such short time. Our results are not so visible and extraordinary to change much from one week to another. We risk to be not trustworthy. Let’s stay with the QR and let’s do it through the web form tool. Too many face-to-face NA2 meetings. They are too expensive in time and money We should try to converge them during the EGEE conferences and UF, just as all other tasks and activities do. To change: View -> Header and Footer
