Start thinking……. Have you ever had to make a choice between two actions knowing that someone would get hurt either way? How do you make that choice?

Agree? Disagree?

Would you drop the bomb?

Objective: Evaluate & analyze the reasons for and Objective: Evaluate & analyze the reasons for and impact of dropping the atomic bomb. Ess. ?s: What were the reasons? What were the impacts? What was the “best” choice?

Video – Atomic Bomb As we watch video clips about the Atomic bomb Listen critically for reasons & impacts Be prepared to discuss

Flocabulary https://www.flocabulary.com/unit/world-war-ii/

Japanese aggression Japan invaded surrounding countries seeking raw materials In response, US placed an embargo on scrap metal, oil & aviation fuel US also demanded that Japan withdraw from conquered areas – they don’t

Attack on Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941 – ”a date which will live in infamy” Japan sought to cripple US navy - sunk ships, destroyed planes and killed thousands Americans shocked & angry US enters the war

The Manhattan Project Albert Einstein alerted FDR of the power of uranium & urged bomb development 1942 – FDR begins billion $$$ program to secretly build atomic bomb Secret lab in Los Alamos, New Mexico Leaders – physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer & General Leslie Groves Many refugee scientists worked on project

Island Hopping 1942-1945 U.S. military strategy used in the Pacific to reach mainland Japan = capture strategic islands

#1 Lengthy Costly War Years of fighting in Pacific (6 years of war) Takes weeks and long hard fighting with many lives lost to take each island Island of Okinawa - 3 months & more than 100,000 American & Japanese lives Costs rise with each island

#2 German atomic weapons FDR dies in 4th term & VP Truman becomes President He learned: 1. Germans were developing atomic weapons – Hitler would use them 2. Manhattan Project – so were we

#3 Japan – Death before Surrender Japanese fought for the Emperor – a god to them Code of Samurai = death before surrender Kamikaze pilots – turned their planes into missiles (3000) Women & children trained to kill

#4 High Price for Invasion US generals told Truman the cost of invading Japan would be high 1. ½ mil to 1 mil casualties 2. Japanese could continue guerilla-style resistance for 10 years 3. 6 million Japanese troops & armed civilians would fight to the death

#5 American Beliefs We should do whatever necessary to stop the deadly aggression of Japan – fighting for freedom Some advised in favor of using atom bomb to end war Scientists secretly petitioned Truman to be very cautious to use bomb = future destruction of world #1 Priority = American lives must be saved!!!

US tests first atomic bomb July 16, 1945 - tested first atomic bomb in New Mexico desert Code-named Trinity Flash of light visible 180 miles away & sound was heard 100 miles away Still don’t fully know the destructive capability Only have 2 more ready

Conditional Surrender? Japan willing to surrender IF Emperor Hirohito could stay in power – not be disgraced Americans blame him for war (Pearl Harbor), not acceptable US would only accept Unconditional Surrender

B-29s

Do We Drop the Bomb? Too many civilians? Warn Japan? Shock them? Target?

The Dropping of the Atomic Bombs Publicly Truman seemed confident of decision to use atomic weapons to limit further American casualties Privately he was more conflicted over it 11 days after Potsdam Declaration – mission begins

FAT MAN THIN MAN

Hiroshima Aug. 6, 1945 - B-29 Bomber named Enola Gay dropped the Uranium atomic bomb “Little Boy” on Hiroshima 80,000 - 120,000 killed instantly Thousands more from burns and radiation sickness City gone Japan does NOT surrender

HIROSHIMA: DAY OF FIRE Ground Temp 7,000 degrees Hurricane force winds 980 mph Energy released 20,000 tons TNT Buildings destroyed 62,000 Killed immediately 80,000 people Dead by end 1945 140,000 people Total deaths 210,000 people

Nagasaki Aug 9, 1945 – the plutonium atomic bomb “Fat Man” dropped on Nagasaki Between 35,000 and 74,000 killed

V-J Day Japan still debates about surrender – many do not want to Emperor orders Japanese government to surrender August 15, 1945 is “Victory in Japan” Day

Was it wrong? (5 min.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmIBbcxseXM

Coroner’s Report (2.17 min.) http://www.history.com/topics/world-war-ii/bombing-of-hiroshima-and-nagasaki/videos

Just fyi… Firebombing raids just over Toyko – had killed 225,000 – as much as the atomic bomb Japanese would later testify that they would never have surrendered but fought for years The month the invasion was going to happen a massive typhoon hit Japan – might have been a military disaster

Food for thought… Was the use of the atomic bomb inhumane? Is war humane? Would you drop the bomb? No easy answer

“Don’t Break the Bank” Exit Ticket Make sure your answer falls within the dollar amount…

Each word = .10 cents each You have to stay between the dollar amounts. You can’t go under or over or you “break the bank”! Answer the questions. Write your total amount spent at the end of the answer.

$1.00 - $2.50 each Use your chart to answer the questions. 1. What were major impacts of the atomic bomb? 2. Using the reasons we discussed, would you drop the bomb? Why or why not?
