Unit:Plants and animals Science Experiment By: First Class Strand: Living Things Unit:Plants and animals

Objective: to increase understanding of how teeth decay by investigating the effect different materials have on an eggshell

Engage We firstly discussed what might happen If we don’t look after our teeth?

build up in our mouths to produce plaque which sticks to our teeth. Germs build up in our mouths to produce plaque which sticks to our teeth. If we don’t get rid of the plaque, holes can appear in our teeth. If the dentist can’t repair the hole the tooth may be lost forever.

I explained how they would examine how food and drink can cause your teeth to decay. Instead of experimenting on our teeth we are going to use eggs. We discussed how just like your teeth, eggs contain large amounts of calcium.,so I explained how we are going to use eggs instead. The egg shell protects the soft egg on the inside, just like enamel protects our teeth! .The shell of an egg is like the outside of our teeth(Enamel) we are going to do an experiment to show what can happen to our teeth by drinking too much sugary drinks

Items You Need You need: Coke Milk Orange Juice Water White Distilled Vinegar Eggs 1 Camera Clear containers that can hold at least cups of liquid.

Steps: We gently placed the eggs in the containers.

2.Then I got children to pour different liquids in each container.

3.We then left the eggs for a day and removed the eggs from the liquid.

4.We compared and recorded how each eggshell had changed.

What did we learn? The pupils learned the effect that acids and sugar have on their teeth as they can wear down the enamel on their teeth just like the eggshells and the importance of keeping their teeth brushed.
