Activity 1.12 – supporting argument Learning Targets Analyze print and non-print text closely Make specific connections between visual elements and the arguments made in the text

Activity 1.12 – supporting argument Elements of Argumentation Hook / Claim Reasons Supporting Evidence Counterclaim or counterarguments Rebuttal Conclusion/Call to Action

Activity 1.12 – supporting argument During Reading (pg 37) As you read “Dirty Work: The Creeping Rollback of Child-Labor Laws”, mark the text for … The elements of argument (Hook, Claim, Reasons, Supporting Evidence, Counterclaim, Rebuttal, Conclusion, Call to Action).

Activity 1.12 – supporting argument Answer the “Key Ideas and Details” Questions What is the main claim (thesis)? Evaluate evidence presented to support the main claim. Does the author cite primary and secondary sources? Do the sources seem credible? Explain. To what extent does this article include a range of relevant perspectives on the issue of child labor?

Activity 1.12 – supporting argument After Reading Analyze this article from the viewpoint of the audience by answering these questions: Who is the audience? What do they know about the topic? What can you infer about their values or concerns? What possible biases did you see in the speech, either by the speaker or by the people described?

Activity 1.12 – supporting argument Assignment: Work with a partner to research and find additional photos that would strengthen the claim or enhance the writer’s message. Find 5-7 photos – put them in a ppt, include captions, be prepared to share your ppt with the class. Be prepared for your discussion of the argument, and be sure to: Refer to evidence from the text and connect the photos to the text with well- reasoned ideas. Express ideas clearly and persuasively. Respond to all ideas brought out in the group discussion to resolve contradictions and to synthesize ideas presented in the argument.
