Expository Writing Expository—the student is NOT TRYING to convince the reader to think a certain way or to accept a single viewpoint as valid. They are simply trying to explain a certain viewpoint they accept or believe to be true.

Introduction Paragraph Begin with an attention getting statement, quote, or question—the HOOK Most of the time, the last sentence of your introduction is your THESIS.

Thesis Tells what the writer believes about a topic AND The reasons/ideas for the belief in the order they appear in the paper Grandparents can offer their grandchildren important lessons such as respect and unity.

Body Paragraphs These should have information that supports your thesis With limited room (26 lines), you will only need 1 or 2 body paragraphs.

Topic Sentences Begin every paragraph with a topic sentence. You must derive your topic sentences from your thesis.

Topic Sentence Examples THESIS: Grandparents can offer their grandchildren two crucial lessons involving respect and unity. Topic Sentence 1: Grandparents can teach the youngest family members to respect and value older people. Topic Sentence 2: More importantly, grandparents can teach their grandchildren to play a role in the unity and happiness of the whole family.

FEED After providing a topic sentence, you should “feed” your readers by providing… Facts Examples Explanation Details

FEED Example Topic Sentence: Grandparents can teach the youngest family members to respect and value older people. Fact/Example: For instance, when I was younger, my grandfather would tell me stories about his time in the Vietnam War. Explanation/Details: He put his life at risk to protect the freedoms he believed that everyone deserved, including the freedoms of future generations like myself.

Conclusion Restate your thesis in a different way. Give insightful closure. With your introduction and conclusion, you need to make them brief in order to leave room for your body paragraphs. Do not write an extensive intro or conclusion.
